I thought I would let you know that I was asked to join and am now formally a member of The Scottish Canine Consultative Council. There are 14 of us on the Council
We are an organisation , originally set up by the Kennel Club, whose objectives are
'The advancement of public education in the health, care, management, training and control of dogs for the safety of both the public and the animals and the preservation and protection of the public from nuisance by promoting high standards of responsible dog ownership'
I will keep you posted as to what we are up to............our remit is broad and includes involvement with local Councils and The Scottish Parliament in shaping laws relating to dog ownership.
At my first meeting this week I was asked by the Chair to take the floor and explain the 'unique' ( their words not mine!) way our forum deals with what normally are classed as 'problem' dogs by taking them out and socialising them in a large stable pack.
The benefits to both handlers and dogs brought about by our 'extreme' dog walks and proposed climb of Ben Lomond was also a topic of discussion
Looks like we may be put forward as a role model throughout Scotland _________________ John Thomson

It was set up by the Kennel Club....who then stepped back and did nothing with it........they have been trying to get it up and in the public eye for a while so when i was asked to get involved I thought it could be a good idea............time will tell. _________________ John Thomson

Way to go John, congratulations and I hope they will be adding some sponsorship money for the walk of Ben Lomond towards the club...It would be great to see these topics of discussion for good responsible dog ownership being done in the primary schools get the kids on side and educated too. _________________ paw prints on my heart |

Super-John! Well done you. Thank you for being so generous with your time.
There is a need for NCL to review their policy re dogs in schools if young people are to be educated re dogs. I have seen Hearing dogs work really well in schools before and Glencryan school had Trish from Crowbank in when they were doing a careers day.
But, Greenfaulds, where I taught, Head maintained NCL policy was no animals in school. Even last day of term when I took mine down and they ran round the playing fields with senior students, I was reprimanded.
We need to educate Head Teachers and Councillors too. _________________ Regards,

John,
The objectives of this council sounds very promising indeed and if it will benefit dogs, owners and everybody else then surely that's a good thing - I'm all for it.
I believe visiting primary schools with real dogs would also be a good thing to do to try and educate children on how to behave around dogs, how to approach dogs and how to behave when a dog approaches them. As we all know, when a dog attacks (either an adult, child, even another dog) the signs will probably have been there before the attack to warn humans and other dogs that the dog is not happy and feels threatened. Body langauge, growling, snarling....The sings will have bee there and educating children about dogs can only help to reduce these attacks, even though you will always have the ignorant people who fail to understand what a dog is trying to tell them.
It's human failure and error that causes most of the problems dogs experience and it really is us who must try and understand the dog, but at the same time keep the dog, and everyone else safe.
By walking dogs in the large pack like the club does can only help problem dogs to become more stable in life in general, and around other dogs and humans. A very good thing and I hope to join you all very soon.
I wish you luck with being part of the Scottish Canine Consultative Council and hope it will greatly benefit everyone....Dogs and all. |
