sam westies were originally bred for hunting vermin and foxes, they come from the same strain of dogs that produced the scottie, cairn and dandie terriers. _________________ your cat will never annoy by barking at 3am, he wont attack the postman or eat the curtains, although he may climb them to see how the room looks from the ceiling... |

Yes you are correct 'originally' being the key word here, however the modern westie is far removed from its original use an working bloodlines and all that is left mostly is the watered down show blood. Not the same thing at all.
Good workers are prized within the working terrier world, unfortunately like other breeds once they gain recognition from the KC, folk start breeding for cosmetics and to make lots of money from pups and all thoughts o good working terrier blood goes out the window . You be hard pressed to find a westie that could deal with a fox by modern breed standards.
Rare as hens teeth it would seem and vastly just a show dog now .

Sam,
I agree with you that most Westies now are not bred for working purposes now and that their popularity lies within the show world, so their natural insticts are much lower now than what they were originally, I believe. They were still originally bred for hunting vermin even if they don't do that now, which is what we stated to start with. |
