tablets

at some point in your dogs life you will probably have to give your dog something they don't want, be it a worming or herbal tablet.
i was wondering if any one had any tips on how to give a tablet as my two are good at spitting it back out again Twisted Evil

my gran had a dog that would eat all the food around the tablet leaving the tablet where it had been put Rolling Eyes

I wrap the tablet in butter......they swallow the butter because it is so soft........It has always worked for my dogs.

my gran did that. the thing with my two is that Inca tends to suss that the tablet is in chicken or cheese or even hot dogs.
just spoke to my mum she tried butter but again she new it was there. i have tried giving the chicken or whatever to them with out the tablet and then sneaking it in but she is smarter than she makes out.

this advice was actually given to me by a vet!

bit of milky way...shove it in the middle and throw.

Try giving a tablet to a cat...now thats FUN Shocked

When all else fails. You can open his mouth by GENTLY holding the muzzle and pushing the top lip against the teeth. Then pop in the tablet, making sure it goes far back. Hold the mouth shut and stroke the throat until its swallowed. This triggers a swallow reflex. It can take a bit of practice but it works. A vet showed me how to it years ago. Then I usually offer a really tasty treat. Just to say sorry and make sure its really swallowed.

we have to break the tablet into 4 bits like quarters and wrap it in wafer thin meat! (why wafer thin coz for some reason they put it in there mouth and it gone) mine love it that much i dont think they even chew! Never mind smell or sense the tablet!!

I gave Ash his first worming tablet last night...he goes nuts for meat. I wrapped it in a piece of ham and made him wait for it like I normally would (he isn't as well behaved with meat as he is with his treats)...and he took it in one gulp.
Closely followed by another piece, just so he didn't suss lol

That's the same as my 2!!! i make them wait a few secs longer so they dont waste any time on getting it straight down! ha

Mishka is a tablet champion. ( she has had so many in her short time here so Far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

She is usually good and I just say medicine to her. If she takes it she gets a treat.Easy!

I am not always lucky as she will spit some out, I then resort to saying treat and giving it wrapped in cheese ( you could even crush one up in cheese)

As she normally only gets her dog food it is a big treat for her. Very Happy

When I have to give tablets to any of my dogs, I crush them between 2 spoons and sprinkle on their dinner, then they gobble it all up. Totally stress free for both me and my dog. Very Happy

Carol that sounds a good idea too.

My lot are too greedy, put the tablet in a bit of chesse and feed them all a bit of cheese, remembering which one has the tablet in if its only 1 dog getting the tablet Very Happy

with 4 dogs they soon learn to eat whats offered or someone else will get it Laughing
