Stuart
I wont begin to say I understand all of that, but I get the gist of it..... I think!
I suppose that given that garlic is a member of the onion family, and that onions are a no-no for dogs then it does seem logical. Although I would never have thought about it myself. _________________ Parsons Russell fanatic |

Ta Stuart I think it's time to do a bit of research. i did look throuhg the fle treatment I have in the house and they don't list the ingredients so think I'll dispose of them and look into some other products. i expect no matter what we use there will be some possible side affects it's just weighing up the pros and cons |

Absolutely.. that bit of research only shows that in high enough quantities it is likely that garlic will cause an adverse effect. I think the real question is how that will affect the dog and whether the benefit of garlic outweighs the risk... just like the benefit / risk of conventional treatments. |

Now i am more confused than ever.
I do occasionally front line the dogs cause the vet said it would also help with bobs ear mites.
I have used DEET when traveling through india and when I went to africa, though not happily because of the toxicity - but it would be really irresponsible not to.
Dont know what to do about the boys now.
Its ticks im more worried about, I know you can get tick protection to spray on but it is probably fairly toxic too. |

It's confusing alright!!!! I have used frontline on doogle but I do have my concerns about it, i would probably use it again if he got scabies/mites etc but i would be very careful with the dosage, I guess it's all about weighing up the pros and cons. I've slathered myself in Deet in the past too,not very good for me I'm sure, but better than getting malaria i guess!! I think owners with smaller dogs need to especially careful with the dosages of of tick/flea treatments as the different dosage packs you can buy cover a range of weights, so the smaller dogs in that are range are getting much more per Kg of body weight. Onions and garlic are in the same family, they both contain allicin (sp?) which is not good for dogs but is good for us humans |

I have a flea comb and go over the dogs every once in a while with it. If Misty has flea dirt on her, she usually gets them more than the rest, then I check everyone....Scooby never has them, I think as he always hides in duvets, his coat is so very whippety fine, Pixels coat is too coarse I think. Moya will get them sometimesif Misty has them.
I flea comb them, then depending on what I think, they may get a spray of frontline spray, but I have used that once this year and none last year and I think once or twice the year before. I never give them a flea treatment regularly, i know a lot of folk do but I would rather not _________________ lurchers Pixel and Zev and whippet, Fen

we have plug ins that kill insects and keep them at bay. I don't think they would work on ticks but they work on insects. |

I think its just a case of all these things being used in moderation... ive spent the past hour or so reading lots of different things and its very confusing! Lots of different opinions. _________________ Ashley with Holly & Murphy.

Like most things in life a guess, we are only supposed to drink in moderation but you don't see much of us do that |

I asked a respected holistic vet (Richard Allport who writes for some dog publications and runs his own practices in Potters Bar and London) for his opinion on this topic and his reply is that garlic (and onion which is more toxic than garlic) is safe in normal doses ,the Haemolytic Anaemia link is related to massive overdoses.

Misty's herbal treatment for arthritis contains garlic. She seems fine on it. I have started to add a small clove of eating garlic to the Danes' food at night.
I worry about using frontline now.
I will check with flea comb more frequently and deal with ticks if and when they arise.
We can only do what we feel is best for our dogs and hope. _________________ Regards,
