I have read on a few web sites about puppy play times to help socialize pups. does this have to be done after vaccs or can you do this with 2 pups that are still having theirs. I myself have never done this before but would be interested to know what others think? I reckon because I have another dog it would be a no no. I think kiera would benefit out of playtime with another pup. God I am so out of touch with the puppy world. its like being a new mum all over again Razz

Nice idea Margaret.......even a small managed walk for puppies would be great for socialisation. The main worry taking a puppy on our normal walk is the sheer physical size of the big dogs, which can be a concern.
Puppies only would be less stressful for pups and owners Very Happy

I'm sure Eleanor will be able to contribute to this.

hello margaret, we have a 12 week old puppy that we are looking forward to socialisng, his jags clear on thursday this week so we are excited to take him out and meet other dogs as i think he really needs it, gets shy around strangers at the moment. but worried that taking him out to see big dogs might scare him more. i`m sure its prob me worrying to much Very Happy but i think he would love to play around with other pups. use up some energy lol.
how old is kiera?

I take my 19 mnth JRT puppy to the big walks and I have to say it is grewat for her, I really think that getting the puppies out socialising with each other or ina bigger group when ready is a great idea as it does wonders for their confidence. koda will be fine with the other dogs/puppies just take it slowly and don't worry it is the best thing you can do for hime to improve his confidence.

hi guys

socialization is a very important part of puppy life

you should invest some time in puppy socialization classes, check what's in your area and also with your vet

just to let you know that I am a puppy tutor and run puppy training and socialization classes in Cumbernauld and Denny for puppies up to the age of 20 weeks old at the start of classes, so I believe in puppy socialization big time - if anyone is interested you can check out the web www.puppyschool.co.uk. Classes for both Cumbernauld and Denny starting this week are full, next set of 6 classes in Cumbernauld is 23rd August. Maximum of 8 puppies per class.

Hi Margaret, I would check with your vet surgery. A lot of surgeries run socialisation 'classes'. They are also normally free of charge. This may help until the pup can go out on long walks. Take the pup to tesco in your arms and stand outside. ( a great tip I got from John and Marcella)

Yep............. that's what we've always done. Stand outside a busy supermarket with your pup. Loads of trolleys going in and out making loads of noise, lots of people wanting to pet the pup as well as cars, vans, bicycles and others dogs usually too. It's all a great learning curve for them. So much going on. Our two will happily sleep outside Tesco now they are so unfazed by it all.

sounds like a good idea, we have taken her a carry on walks with sheila and she has been in the car on trips out to family. I am trying to train her to sit at the front door while it is open, watching the world go by, we managed to train sheila to sit at the front door and not leave till we signal her, whether it will ever work with kiera is another thing. she watches alot of the things we do with sheila and is picking up some good habits.
she will sit and wait till we say she can have her food which works 80% of the time, I go along the lines of start as you mean to go on. the play biting is almost away except with our youngest son. Will have to work on that with him as don't want her to feel above him. I really need to get back into the habit of word commands we only use hand signals with sheila and sheila focuses well on us when out off lead if she smells something interesting she just stays put till you go tap her bum to get her attention.
