I was at a work dinner recently and guy there used to do the marketing for Pedigree Chum - he said wet dog food had caramel added to it to make it addictive to dogs. And of course it knackered their teeth.

He also said that pet food is the least profitable aisle in a supermarket (after nappies) given the size of the product and how long a big bag will last. Which explains why you only get some brands ie the ones that will do deals with the supermarket.

And he also went on about those with high grain content - when's the last time you saw a wolf chew on a bit of wheat. Though they do eat things humans wouldn't so lets not get too squeamish. Our old dog lived to 16 on el cheapo dog food (all we could afford) and had very few trips to the vet.

My motto is buy the best you can afford while taking convenience into consideration - and that goes for me as much as the dog. As I suspect a cheap sausage has about as much meat in it as a butcher's pencil.

This is a very good article. I am glad I do not feed my dogs by products which are essentially 'waste' and not fit for human consumption.

I know raw feeding takes a bit of organisation and space, and sometimes a strong stomach (for chopping dirty tripe and heart ect Shocked ) but at least I know exactly what my boys are eating.

I am only sorry I cannot swap my cat on to raw feeding, but I just cant get her to eat the bones, raw fish and chicken, no problem but without the bone content she is not getting a balanced diet.

Thanks Emma. We haven't worked out the bones bit yet. How do we keep them outside and apart so they don't fight over them? Poppy is VERY possessive of her food but so is Basil, both having been starved. Rolling Eyes

Lorna at the moment i give them the bigger bones when they are in the crates. Chicken wings aren't a problem because i give them one at a time and they eat them so quickly.

I just generally keep an eye on them, as Skye always wants what Lady has Rolling Eyes

Not allowed any meat products inside the house. I can't give them bones inside the house. Crates are inside. I reckon I can tie each one on a long line in a different area of the garden and get them to eat the bones outside. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
Going to try the chicken wings this coming week. Tesco here I come.
