Hi,

I'm in the process of moving my two over to a raw diet now that we've managed to find sources of meat up here.

I'm just building up my stocks of frozen mackerel for the winter but thought I had been told at one time to only feed fish once or twice a week.

Can somebody confirm how often I can feed my dog mackerel ?

Thanks,

Peter

Peter,
I feed fish occasionally but see no reason why twice a week would cause any problems.

I've had some more feedback on this subject and I'm being told that it's the fish oil that can cause problems if it is fed too often. Apparently, too much fish oil can clog up the kidneys and prevent them from functioning and in the worst cases can lead to death.

I'm told that twice a week should be ok (as John said), so that's what I'll work to.

Thanks to those who posted here - appreciate your input.

There was a time, when Kai was younger and still on 3 meals a day that I was feeding fish 5/6 times a week. Pilchards, Mackeral and tuna although tuna was just once a week. I didn't realise there were any issues with feeding it so often. It doesn't seem to have harmed Kai in any way. Now he's down to just 2 feeds a day I only feed fish a couple of times a week.

I'm not sure if the amounts are the critical thing but my vet did say the same thing at one time about sardines.

I also feed my cat tuna twice a day along with the breakies - will have to check if there is any danger of him suffering the same way.

Hi Peter,

I'm no expert on this, but I feed Leon on fish around 3-5 times per week.

I tend to feed the white fish chunks though, which I think are less oily than fish such as mackerel...

I alternate between raw white fish and also chappie, though i am going to try him back on the freeflow mince again (he just has a tendency to gobble it all down in two seconds flat and then vomit!)

He seems to be fine with the fish - no adverse reaction. In fact, last time I was at the vet they said he was extremely healthy... then I told them he was on a raw diet! Wink LOL

I know what you mean about gobbling it up and then not being able to keep it down. My Aaron did that with a large mackrell so now I cook mackrell fillets in the microwave for 2/3 minutes for both mine.

I'm now filleting the fish we catch and freezing it down so we have a supply for the winter months. I've had to invest in a large chest freezer but I think its worth it if I'm moving to a barf diet for my two.
