MITES

Can anyone tell me i think yoda has mites in her ears. There is a brown discharge and she is shaking her head. Is there anything i can get because my bank balance cant take another visit to the vet if i can help it. Thanks

Hi Amanda,

It definately sounds like ear mites, try cleaning out the ears with some cotton wool and warm water, then use a droper to administer some olive oil to each ear. try this twice a day for 3-4 days. Apparantly the olive oil suffacates them! if it does not clear up then u can get some of the ear mite teatment from the site recommended a few weeks ago. https://www.discountvetsupplies.co.uk/AdminMaster/Home.aspx

Hi Amanda,

It DOES sound like ear mites, if it is there's usually a cheesy earthy type smell that will go with it.

I use Canaural for my dogs, Staffs are prone to earmites, but I only get it from the vet on prescription, not sure if you can buy online. Also it is Steroid based so IF dogs ears react badly i.e. swell up and become itchy then discontinue use immediately and a vets visit will be needed, my friends Rottie had a bad reaction to it but all my lot, cats & dogs have been fine, you never know until you use it I'm afraid, hope that helps.xxxxxxx

A clean with ear wipes can sometimes do the trick, but if the infestation is bad the only thing that does it is drops from the vet. And that's really the only way to confirm it - I've taken Otto before thinking he had mites (as he'd had them before) and in fact he didn't, was probably just the result of swimming and his ear was just skanky.
