When to step in?

Generally Otto and Rudi play well, but now and again Otto gets too pumped up (quite literally) and gets too rough.

We've been tending to leave them to it, because Rudi goes back for more, only stepping in if it looks like the pup is getting a bit scared or hurt and Otto is getting out of hand.

When's right point to step in and how best to manage it?

Inca and Echo are bad for this. and its almost always Echos fault that the kick off. we tend to just shout and they normally brake up them selves. other than that its just grab them by the collar and pull them apart but i never fully separate them like into different rooms, its just a case of braking it up.

like you say you can tell when things are getting out of hand, so i would say your jumping in at the rite time. i can tell by the pitch of echos bark if she is just messing about of if she is relay fighting.

where as when Gypsy has a go at Inca the sort it out in seconds them selves.

I agree with Kendal Suzanne. I think you're doing exactly the right thing - they have to find the level of acceptable play and behaviour themselves. It's how dominance is established and best it be established whilst pup is still young and playful. YOU are stepping in when it's reached a pitch that they are overexcited and that is perfect, they'll recognise their own but also YOUR limitations and boundaries this way. I STILL monitor play in this house and my pooches are now 9, 7 and 7 1/2. They KNOW the limits but they also do get a tiny bit carried away sometimes so that's the point I still step in at.

When Rudi goes back for more then, within reason, he gets what he deserves. He's starting to suss when Otto's a bit too pumped up and to get out of the road if Otto is running around at full pelt.

God only knows what it will be like when they're the same size Shocked

So other than the OTT play sometimes I assume all is going well and little Rudi is nicely settled???

You are doing great. They will adjust to each other. The garden will adjust too. 2 Great Danes and our garden still survives their charging around. I don't always - but they are fine...

Otto seems to have got used to him. The other day he went and lay next to him and went to sleep, next day he turfed him off the cushion and was beating him up.

The wee one is a feisty little character, very independent and strong-willed - I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up the boss. Certainly not scared of Otto, well not until Otto gets really annoyed then you find him under the BBQ Laughing
