|
|
Hello,
2 wee questions about Dexter.
First one is that he had the "snip" a few weeks ago and my previous male dogs have all been "properly" snipped (as in the offending area is removed) but Dexter still has his...Is this normal practice now???
The second is a bit more tricky. Yesterday I took Dexter out with my cousin's boxer for a walk. They've walked a lot before and played well but with shifts and so on we've not walked together since the end of the summer. They really didn't get on though. We had plenty growls and a lot of scuffling. After an initial 5 minutes we managed to get them split and kept their attention by throwing balls and they lay next to each other after that as if we'd achieved a "truce". Then Dexter chased a rabbit into some bushes and dropped his ball in the process and we lost it. After that Dexter kept nipping Harry's bum trying to get him to chase him to play since he had nothing to keep his attention with his ball lost but, understandably, Harry wasn't too pleased with this and it started the growling again and the scuffling. The next time I caught Dexter I put him back on his lead as Harry is smaller and, inevitably, being a bit overpowered by him.
It was really horrible to watch and we're all a bit worried now as we've rented a cottage for our full family for a weekend break in 2 weeks and both dogs are coming. Harry has a wee bald patch on his bum due to Dexter nipping so I understand that my cousin is quite upset about it all. I think though that Dexter just wanted to play and he does play rough and then when Harry growled back it's just escalated.
Dexter goes to doggy daycare every fortnight and we always get the report that he never needs to be segregated due to behaviour and plays very well with the other dogs. He also plays with a friends dog that lives round the corner from us without problem and did play with Harry very well previously. Both dogs are brilliant off lead and are walked off lead daily so meeting and playing with other dogs happens often without problem. I don't think, therefore, that this is an aggression problem or anything long term but obviously we're running out of time to socialise a lot before going away.
Does anyone have any tips or tricks we could do in order to ease the next meeting? We're meeting again at the weekend for another walk over the field. Any help would be very much appreciated!! |

Hi Cat
I'm not the greatest one to give advice on this but since they have not been together since the summer, I would try again. Cleo and Tubbs used to be muzzled when together but I don't think Dexter needs that. It could be just practice makes perfect.
I would definitely give it another go. _________________ What youneed for the ultimate stressbuster---

What I was also thinking was-- the cottage will also be neutral territory for them and that might help.
It's a while since I've had male dogs but when mine got snipped, their bits we're still there but the insides had been removed so they looked smaller.
Don't know if this helps. _________________ What youneed for the ultimate stressbuster---

When angus got "snipped" he was left with 2 empty sacks which have shrunk. I thought normal practice was castration which involved removal of testes |

Hi Cat,
Dexter is perfectly normal, the vets seem to leave that bit there and it will eventually shrink and you won't notice anything. When Dileas got the snip, I thought the vet had forgotten to remove, but it's all good. Jax will be getting done asap as he was getting amorous with my brother last night which was not appreciated
Don't be put off by Dexter and your cousin's dog, i'm sure they'll be fine. Dexter probably still has the hormones running around as it takes time for it all to settle down. Hope that helps |

Hi,
Thanks for the "snip" information! Saved me an awkward call to the vet to ask if they'd forgotten something....!! Poor Jax, I'm sure he'll be milking the sympathy!!
Just home from our walk with my cousin's dog again. David came this week too and he was pretty shocked to see how they behaved as I think he thought I was exaggerating last week. We ended up keeping Dexter on a flexi lead for the first good while after he started a battle immediately until he wasn't reacting to Harry anymore then let him off for a run.
We also took Dexter up the hill first and had him off lead playing with his ball to try burn a bit of energy before Harry came too. We walked near another GSD and a lab and he didn't even react to either! I also thought it would let them meet more "naturally" rather than walking them together and building up any tension or anticipation. Then Harry came up and they were fine after the initial disagreement as long as they both had the tennis balls and they were chasing them away from each other. I found Dexter quite unpredictable though as sometimes he'd run up to Harry, "speak" to him then run off again but sometimes start the nipping and it became a big scuffle again. We're walking again next weekend but I just can't believe how much it has deteriorated since the summer! I've never seen Dexter behave like this at all and, as we've been thinking about getting Dexter a sister come summer time, I have to say I'm pretty put off after this.
We head off on our family weekend the following week and I'm kinda dreading it as I foresee Dexter having to be kept on his "lead of shame" constantly. Any suggestions about anything else we could try? Right now I'm pretty tempted just to phone Dexter's daycare and book him in... |
