I'm looking for advice to help Cap (15wk border collie) to overcome his desire to 'play' with traffic. I had been using 'leave it!' and giving a treat when he didn't react to the passing traffic. However, over past few days this has been working less. Yesterday morning I shouted 'NO!' and he listened. I thought this was great, we were making progress........until this morning on the walk to school. He did not listen one bit to the 'NO!' or 'Leave it'

WORST morning ever!!! I now have a very sore finger from hanging onto his harness (which thankfully I still put on along with his collar). Feeling a bit low about it and losing my confidence with walking him along this tiny stretch of road.

Anyone else gone through/still going through this? Any suggestions? We've only been walking for 2 weeks so I know it's early days yet but the quicker we help him get over this desire the better!!

Hi,

I am in no way the expert on this but I've been through it with my GSD so do not feel that you are alone!! Dexter had me in tears of frustration many a time!!

Dexter, although now almost 2, still does it when he's bored. We tend not to walk along roads so much as we're lucky where we live there are farm roads and fields all round us so he's really only ever on his lead for 2 minutes but when we have to walk along the pavements (eg we're coming up to winter and it'll be too dark for the farm roads. I'm DREADING it this year!!!) he can be a nightmare.

I cope by 1 -playing with him in the garden first to try and "burn off" extra jumping energy. 2 - letting him have "sniffing" space/a longer lead to keep him occupied and 3 - letting him carry a toy. My favourite is a Kong squeaker with rope (available on ebay for about £4) as I can tie it to his harness so if he decides to drop it I don't have to do the mad scramble to catch it before we end up on the road!!!

Cat x
