Hi John, I will give it some serious thought. Thanks.
However, we only have the one freezer and don't have room for another. |

Doogle gets mostly raw food and some kibble, also sometimes a tin of sardines. When we first got him we gave him only kibble and he had dry skin. The vet said to put oil on his food, but I did a bit of reading and changed him to raw food and his skin is fine now. He loves it too- and it's cheaper than dog food. |

Bear and Tala are on Science plan. I also give them bones from butcher couple of times a week and doggy treats. Was wondering about raw have read lots but you all keep mentioning chicken my two love it (favorite treat)but I make sure they don't get bones as I've always thought they were bad for dogs is this not the case?????????? |

Bones are a natural food source for dogs. The only thing you should never do is feed cooked bones. When bones are cooked they easily splinter but when raw a dog can eat and digest them easily. _________________ Dogs are like Chocolate, you just can't have one! |

Chicken bones are only bad for dogs if cooked. Once cooked they become brittle and tend to splinter and can be a choking hazard - raw they are fine. |

Fiona and kirsty THANKS This will make my two extremely happy will give it a try see if they enjoy raw chicken meat as much as cooked stuff. Meat and bones together should be very enjoyable for them Bear should be no problem as he refuses nothing but other one if fussy. |

My two are on 100% raw and they love it! Although Skye was on that Science plan when we got her.
In my opinion and it is only mine, science is not very good.
Skye had dry skin and her poo was DISGUSTING!! It was bright yellow, very sloppy and stunk to high heaven!!
Now she is on raw, hardly any poo compared to before and it is solid and i don't need a gas mask on to clean it up
John and Marcella's tips on raw have also helped me to vary their diets more too. _________________ Happiness is being loved by 2 Great Danes |

I am not saying it is bad for bear Jenny, i just don't like it
Plus i don't like to line the vets pocket anymore than i have to
The difference in Skye's coat and teeth, not to mention her bowel movements and drinking habits have all improved tremendously since switching her to raw!
but i do realise raw feeding is not for everybody _________________ Happiness is being loved by 2 Great Danes |

Jenny, I think most of us used to dry feed on the vets recommendation.
I used to mix dry and tinned (for the human aspect as I just did not fancy putting down dried food for every meal) I took mine off tinned food over a year ago because my white shepherd was scratching himself raw, and I had been feeling uncomfortable feeding my dogs the crap that they put into commercial dog food. even the dried stuff (though burns and jwb are good dry foods I know - and I do feed my cat science plan, and this does not sit well with my conscience as I don't approve of hills - have tried her on raw but without success) am looking into alternative feeding for her.
They hated the dried food without a mixer through it - so I then went to the knackers yard and bought cooked beef mince as an alternative to dog food.
Then I really started researching a raw diet as I was becoming aware of the cruelty involved in some of the research methods employed by the large commercial dog food companies and the rubbish in the ingredients..
I have been feeding raw for almost a year now - my dogs scoff every meal and their teeth look fantastic. Dodge my white shepherds teeth were full of tartar when I got him at 3 years old. Dodge has only been at the vet for an accident and a very contagious outbreak of conjunctivitis which a lot of our dogs caught. Bob has only been at the vet for a skin condition he suffers from. Both dogs are in great health and their digestion has improved greatly. before they suffered from the weak stomache common to GSDs
I would never go back to a commercial dog food diet, but I realise that raw feeding is not for everyone. Even my own partner hates it and has admitted that if anything happened to me the dogs would revert back to pedigree scum |

Hills is the diet of choice recommended by most vets.......vets spend 1 week of their 7 year course studying canine nutrition........and that week is funded by ............Hill's.........cynical me?
Have a look at this thread regarding the ingredients in Hills

My Great Danes are on Royal Canin Great Dane kibble as recommended by breeders and SGDR. My old Beagle is on JWB kibble.
As a vegetarian with vegan kids I find handling meat difficult. I have to weart gloves. However, after listening to John and others in class, I have started adding raw mince to Poppy's diet. She is a starved rescue we are trying to put weight on. She is fed 4 times a day:
Breakfast 400gms Royal Canin Great Dane kibble (with any porridge left from out breakfast - not a lot)
Lunch 400gms raw mince or Tuna fish
Dinner 400gma Royal Canin Gt Dane kibble
Supper can of creamed rice pudding
She has gained 13.4 kilos in 5-6 weeks on this diet. She now weighs 32.4.
Once she is up to weight we will cut her down.
Basil, 4 yr old Great Dane weighs 70k
Breakfast 400gms Royal Canin Gt Dane kibble
Dinner 400gms Royal Canin Gt Dane kibble or raw mince (must be kept secret from family)
Misty, 12 year old Beagle
Breakfast small mug of JWB kibble
Dinner small mug of JWB kibble or small amount of raw mince, 4/5 ozs (must be kept secret from family)
I buy meat fresh each day and bring it in via the side gate so it doesn't enter the house. My Husband and kids will not enter house if I bring meat into it. I feed it immediately outside to the dogs. They absolutely love it.
Poppy and Misty fight over bones which are only allowed outside in the garden. Basil won't eat them - he buries them and one of the others digs them up so they can fight over them. I am avoiding the bones at the moment because of this. Too many other issues to deal with first. _________________ Regards,
Lorna, Basil & Poppy

Bubbles is on RAW and loves it
I give her 1/2lb with a cup of mixer (from AMP) then another 1/2lb later on. She love it and there is very rarely anything left. I love the fact that her coat is shiny, she`s putting on weight ( a little at a time) and she is full of energy.
About once a week I give her 4 chicken wings which she absolutely devours.
Like most other people here I would recommend RAW _________________ My life belongs to a Collie |
