I believe that prior to the second world war GSDs were called exactly that in this country but due to the war the breed became very unpopular - so the name was changed to Alsatian - Alsace being a region near the German/French border. BUT - this could be an urban legend Rolling Eyes but its what I was told

My Grandad fought in the second world war and he used to tell me that story Kirsty. About how everything that used to be known as German became so unpopular that they either destroyed it or changed its name. Obviously people didn't want to get rid of their dogs so the name was changed Very Happy

yeah that storys true. its a weird one though, lots of people think gsds and alsations are two different breeds. some people think its size, and some people think its to do with the length of their coats. weird!!

Our royal family changed its name from Battenberg to Mountbatten after the first world war because of anti German feeling.

I have had people actually argue with me that I am wrong and they are definitely two different breeds Laughing Usually they are neds so not sure anyone could convince them they are wrong Laughing
