Think its a schnauzer thing wouldn't want to list the things my two have had a chew or dug up, just in case Gerry had a look at this lol But i am not very good at the training thing...... Have to stop asking the dog to pleas do as i ask.
The crate is a great thing, to have thou, even if it just for the dogs safety. Katie got stuck in the cord of my blinds, but thankfully i was at home to untie her. |

Aww, thank you everyone!
Think I will be investing in a crate for him!
I feel I may have painted him worse than he is, lol, he's not a bad wee soul really!
He actually played really well with Roxy the Border Collie after their initial meeting! But he has been challenging this week! |

How old is Rufus? I believe that up until around a year and a half, most dogs go through a stage where they attempt to "push the bounderies to test you to see how far they can go". At this point in their lives, training can prove difficult as they want to go and explore everything around them. Eventually, most dogs will settle down and are much easier to train as they get older, however you must be clear and consistant with your training and socialisation to start with.
Some dogs never grow out of the "pushing the bounderies to test you to see how far they can go" stage, and with these dogs I believe you have to be constantly on the ball with them, pre-empting certain unwanted behaviours to stop them occurring...with these dogs it's about managing situations.
In saying that, your dog is just a puppy and the things he is doing in your first post are normal puppy things as they don't know any better at that age, you have to teach them how to behave in certain situations. This takes time and a lot of patience, but with clear, consistant and regular training he should mature into a well-balanced dog.

 you might just have caused Susan to hyperventilate .............. Rufus is only about 14 weeks or so ................... she's got AGES to put up with Rufus the Ruffian!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Yes, they do end up loving their crates...
When I put Molly's away, she went and lay on the spot where it used to be.  I haven't used it since, and it was only intended for use when she was a puppy for toilet training etc, and to keep her safe from destroying the house when we were out! |

Jodie (our older min schnauz) is 10 now. When she puts her mind to it, she can outsmart us all.
She was brought up in a flat - she was incredibly quickly housetrained and went happily up and down in the lift - we lived on the 5th floor and she was there for 3 years until we moved here.
The other day, as I paid the window cleaner, she slipped out, and trotted purposefully of up the road. Fortunately, Chris spotted her from an upstairs window and we set out in hot pursuit! She only did it to prove she could!
6 months ago she ate a candle which had been in place for years as a decoration. She did it because she could!
I collect teddy bears - from time to time she moves one and puts it into another room. She makes no attempt to destroy it, but she will tear her toys to pieces.
2 evenings ago, she dug up a houseplant in the lounge - just for the hell of it, no harm done.
The other day she gently took a golf ball from a tiny little girl in the glen! (I did give it back). She later found her own and proudly carried it all round the walk.
One of main her ambitions in life is to eat the bird food when I forget to shut the connecting gate to the garden.
All in all, if you have a min schnauz, Susan, you will be kept on your toes for the rest of your life.
You will also have more fun and laughs than you could ever have imagined.

Oh can I play this game?!
So far Star has:
Eaten at least a quarter of our kitchen wall.
Dug a hole in our hall wall
Eaten a massive piece of skirting.
Chewed right through his leash and had me standing like a muppet with no dog.
Dug a hole almost right through our laminate in the kitchen.
Eaten through countless bin bags to eat the rubbish. ( I no longer have a bin)
Dug what must be now at least a 3ft deep hole in our garden. ( I kid you know he struggles to get out of it now!)
Terrified every child in our area by barking like a crazy dog at them!
Oh I could go on and on .............

In the spring, a few months after we got Molly, she dug holes in the lawn, dug up the shrubs that had been in the garden for years, and dig plants from plant plots - the destructive wee menace that she was. She was just a puppy then though, that's the things they do. She doesn't attempt anything like that now.
If my granpa is digging up his potatoes or carrots, Molly occasionally has a wee dig with him, but she never attempts to dig anywhere else. If she did, we wouldn't let her help dig up the potatoes and carrots!
