i have to agree with you nicola, im horrified at the thought of somebody harming my cat.
i understand the need to to protect your birds but surely there are more humane ways of deterring animals such as cats?

Suzanne,

as a cat owner I can fully understand your reaction.

But animals do not behave in 'humane' ways.......this is something we humans try to impose.

cats kill birds and mice/rodents...dogs chase and kill cats/foxes etc Unpleasant as it is this is nature.

I know you are vegitarian but in general humans kill cows, chickens etc.........to eat.

This post is NOT having a go at anyone.......it is simply fact.

John,

There is a difference between a dog killing a rat, for example, to a dog killing a cat, a cat which could be one of our pet cats. This should not be allowed and restrictions should be made so that it doesn't happen.

People should not let their dogs, whether they are working or pet, to kill cats which most probably could be pet cats, our cats.

If a large wild cat or dog for that matter was killing your pet Molly or Roxy....where would you stand?

If Molly or Roxy were killing your neighbours cat....where would you stand?

The key to successful cat-dog introductions is to expose them to one another gradually under controlled conditions. You want to avoid creating situations where the cat runs away and the dog's prey-chase instinct is activated. I have a cat Its taken me along time to introduce them to each other, but its getting better Kaiser wants to chase and play with it, cat not up for that. Kaiser chase the cat and the bird, the cat chase the bird. I have goto watch everywhere to see who is next for the chase.

If a large, wild cat or dog was killing my dogs, I would have that animal destroyed.

If Molly or Roxy were killing a cat, I would have them destroyed - as hard as it would be, it would be the right thing to do as I wouldn't want another life, someone elses pets life put at risk of being killied. And I adore both my dogs. I am sure neither of my dogs would kill a cat, but I suppose you never know 100%.

We see ducks every day at the dams. I put both Molly and Roxy on leads when they're at the edge of the water, or on the embankment. I won't allow them to chase them, it's not fair on the ducks.

I agree 100% with that.........same with cats....mine hate cats/rabbits/birds.....anything that is naturally 'prey'

Responsible pet ownership is something we feel strongly about Nicola, so anything to avoid a dog harming any other animal is what we do at all costs.
But I think the point made earlier is purely that of pointing out the laws of nature i.e. dogs v cats v mice/birds etc, not anyone admitting that they think it is right to allow it to happen. Smile

They chase the odd bird, but that's as far as they go, they have never (thank god) caught one, never mind kill it. Shocked The birds are too quick for them.

Molly tries to chase the birds off our fence. I swear they sit there just to annoy her. She sits and moans away while they're there giving her the evil eye. She sounds like a motor bike starting up, her moans and groans get louder and louder. Roxy doesn't have a clue. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Our next door neighbours have a dovecote ................ and also a labrador ................ who once ate one of the doves...................
But hey, not the dogs fault, they lock the dog outside for hours at a time, no kennel, no cover of any description. So I think she just got bored!!!!!!!

That's shocking, Marcella. All of it. If they were my neighbours i'd have reported them for neglect, without a doubt.
