i have three cats all out door cats although one (murphy) is happily sitting on my bed cleening himself as i type.
i would hate to have anything hapen to them or my dogs, inca likes to chase birds but only if the are in the air (i think she is trying to be like dumbo with the big floppy ears and need a bird fether to fly )
i was thinking that Allans chickens, birds and ferets might be classed as livestock and he might be intitled to the similer rights as a farmer who still has the right to shoot a dog in his feild. (i know that most of us had that fear at barhill when two of the dogs sliped through the fence, it was a horrible feeling )
i would like to say that i am not taking sides of right or wrong, just interested to now if it is true or not. _________________ microchiping and grooming www.chipnclip.co.uk

Dodge has caught a crow by the tail and it lost a good few of its tail feathers, and a fox and injured the fox, the fox went off into the distance sreaming loudly. I was really distressed by the incident with the fox but it is just instinct
Nicola, I dont think you would have your dog destroyed if it killed a cat,
Any one who had an animal destroyed because it followed its instinct should be put down themselves. What you seem to forget is that these dogs are not only pets - they are animals not so far removed from wild dogs and wolves and you will never completely breed out instinct.
Nicola you have just PMd me and directly insulted one individual on this forum and left me in no doubt what you think of the rest of us.

Kirsty,
Believe me, I don't want to be responsible for having someones pets killed. I would never forgive myself if it happened again and I wouldn't take the risk. Never.
I dislike one person on the board, and also detest some of the harsh and punitive training methods used on some of the dogs.
Tolerant and patient? Aye, right. |

How can you dislike someone over some comments on a web forum? Have you ever even met this person?
My goodness Nicola... I think you maybe need to come down off your high horse a wee bit. Perhaps things are going a bit OTT here and you are getting overly upset?
I don't want to start WW3 or upset anyone, but it seems to me that when others have differing views you just go on and on, instead of letting it drop. But you can't railroad people in to agreeing with you.
The one yesterday with Kendal was a prime example. Even when several people tried to politely say "let's agree to differ" you kept coming back.
After all, this is supposed to be a forum for people to get together, chat about their pets and the club and perhaps make friends, and while I am sure "lively debate" is encouraged, I think we all have to draw a line somewhere.
So... you know... peace out everyone... _________________ Dogs are the leaders of the planet.

Linsey,
Yes, I have met the person. And the dog.
I'm not getting upset, i'm being matter-of-fact. Perhaps things are going a bit over the top though. I, just like many other, feel that responsible dog ownership is paramount.
I'm deadly serious when I say that if my dog killed cats that I would have them put to sleep. Touch wood that it never happens.
I'm not after everyone agreeing with me - I don't care if nobody does - is that not obvious?
I defend my own corner. I don't care if i'm not popular. |

Thank you Kendal!
I started to post on to this thread last night but decided for the sake of my blood pressure and peace to delete the response. I just wish some others would have the same thoughts before posting and upsetting others. Now - Sorry I need to rant.
My Beagles have caught and killed birds in flight and rabbits in the forest. They have tried to get the damned Tom who comes through their dog flap and sprayed all over the kitchen. Unfortunately. I am now having a new kitchen fitted as I could not get rid of the stink. I am damned if anyone would kill my dogs. I hate the eupemism PTS. What are the chances of the cat owner taking responsibility for the tom's behaviour? One of the neighbours trapped it and took it to the vet who spayed it. The neighbours who had suffered paid.
My Granma bred Bedlingtons who lived happily (ish) with her ducks, geese and chickens. But they killed lots of feathered and furry creatures, even, we assumed feral, cats. Creatures who are carnivores hunt and kill. Most at least eat what they kill - unlike some domesticated cats. _________________ Regards,

So, Lorna, say one of your dogs wandered in to someone elses garden, perhaps it done the toilet or wandered in to the house, would it be suitable for this dog to be killed? |

But the difference is that Lorna is a responsible dog owner Nicola. She would never allow that to happen. |

I think some people posting on this thread need to take a reality check. Dogs are dogs not people. As much as we train them and socialise them they have natural instincts that are bound to kick in.
I wouldn't want my cat to be hurt or killed by a dog but hey it may happen. He goes outside, alone, unsupervised although he is a hunter he is also pray to alot of different animals. Foxes for example, they would rip him apart if they got him. Other cats are also a big threat to him, they could easily mortally wound him in a fight.
To say that anyone would demand the destruction of a animal because it killed their cat is ridiculous! I love cats but accidents happen and its a big bad world out there. Harvey has killed countless birds and mice, he wouldn't think twice in killing anything smaller than him. Its just his nature.
I have no doubt if Harvey came across a teacup breed he would kill it, or at least give it a good go. _________________ Dogs are like Chocolate, you just can't have one! |

6 or 7 years ago I was walking my dopg , in the dark on the local golf course..........it had been snowing so visibility was actually quite good.
I had a black GDS bitch Jet at the time.....anyway we came face to face with a cat...a big cat! The same size as her.........from the shape of its ears and checking on the net the best match I came up with was a Lynx.
Thank god Jet had a good recall............because I have NO DOUBT that the cat would have easily killed her.
........I don't walk on the golf course in the dark now _________________ John Thomson

Thank you, Marcella.
Nicola, my dogs are within a secure 1/acre of enclosed rear garden to which they have access 24/7 via a Great Dane dog flap. There are two gates and six foot high brick walls. Even the front door leads to a secure area before you reach the drive. Buying my house the most important instruction to the estate agent was a large secure dog proof rear garden. I cannot cat proof my garden. I have badger proofed it because the badgers in the glen - across the road - could seriously damage my dogs.
If my dog soils anywhere I clean it up. If my dog destroyed someone's kitchen I would be responsible and pay compensation. I do not kill, or contribute to the death of animals unnecessarily! I do not eat them or drink their milk. I do not wear their coats either.
I would euthanize a dog who was so sick and in pain that they had no quality of life. I have asked my family to arrange similar for me.
The only reason any of my dogs would be killed justifiably would be if shot by a farmer for destruction of livestock or if they ever attacked a child. ONLY THEN.
Dogs are carnivores! I am a vegetarian so I choose not tear the flesh of animals apart with my teeth. They do! They do not choose not because they can not - they are dogs!

Lorna... "ad hominem" - I like it - I had to google it, but I like it.
I'm going to remember that one!
