Yesterday I got given a Christmas present which I sussed out to be a box of chocolates. I came home and put it safely behind the baby gate and along out of Cuthbert's reach. I thought that even he couldn't put his paws through a gate and along about three feet to reach it. I went upstairs , came back down about 10 minutes later to mayhem. The gate was open, the present wrapping was lying on the floor with the chocolates all gone!! I quickly phoned the vet who told me me to give me as much salty water as he would drink , to make him vomit, I did that and he didn't and to give him some charcoal in the form of burnt brown toast. He enjoyed both (strange dog!!) and to keep a close eye on him for uncoordination or breathing problems. Thankfully there have been no problems like that , only diarrhoea which for once I'm thankful to see. Honest to goodness I feel I've aged about 15 years since Cuthbert came along. Just goes to show even when you think there is nothing dangerous about dogs will find a way. I guess I hadn't shut the gate properly. Now I'm neurotic about it.!!

You will have some stories to tell by the time that dog is an old timer that's for sure, if he don't send you Grey an mad first..lol Smile
I am glad he is ok. The worse chocolate is the high coco solids stuff, like 'green and blacks' or the 'thorntons dark'. The higher the coco solids the more poisonous it is. I have banned the really dark stuff from my home now ( just in case). My lad got just a small bit o that stuff once after i dare to go to the loo an left a bit by my computer. I come back just in time to catch him in the act too!! he had diarrhea for 3 days!! I wont chance that again cos he is a greedy, wee b*ugger an can swallow it down faster than i can get my hand down his throat to get it back. Very Happy

We live an learn eh Rolling Eyes You ain't the first an you wont be the last hon.

Gaelle, we all suffer the same. Hide the Chocolate far higher than you can reach. I put it in the fridge door in the top cheese compartment.
But, even there isn't safe if you combine small child with chair and very intelligent Great Dane. Cheese and chocolate are not great.
Have a great and a safe Christmas.

Gaelle - what a dog!'you'll be pulling your hair out with him!
youre very lucky he wasnt very sick, we see a lot of dogs at this time of year in that situation, can be quite serious, seen 2 dogs die of chocolate poisoning!
theyre such wee horrors, and so quick, i left the room once to go get a drink of water and when i came back, 2 whole apple turnovers which had been sitting out on the table were gone! if it hadnt been for a spot of cream on brodies face, i would have sworn they were never there, he was so quick! Very Happy

"Just 240 grams of unsweetened dark chocolate contains enough methylxanthines to kill a 40-kilogram dog, about the size of a German shepherd."

Shocked

I think I'll move the 800g of fondue chocolate from our cupboard into the shed... on a high shelf... in a locked box.
