Poorly dogs

Does anyone know how Fiona's getting on with Jake? Is he any better?
Only Lady and Skye don't seem to be getting any better and i was wondering what else i could do.
Tried starving for 24hrs and it made no difference. So feeding small meals as normal but they are still
having diarrhea Sad

Jake had severe diarrhea this morning. The vomiting has stopped but the poor boy is still unwell. I saw him yesterday and he was looking OK ........... probably because he's eating again. He has an appetite so that's good!

That's what my two are like. Appetite is great, sickness gone but really bad runs still Sad

Jake was was given anti-biotics by the vet. Apparently this virus has transferred from humans to dogs and is particularly difficult to shift......the normal routine of fasting for 24 hrs seems to make no difference this time around.

Do you think it's a good idea to get my 2 to the vets if Jake has had antibiotics?

possibly worth a try if it's not shifting. Also try foods that will bind them up like porridge but made with water, rice kept in the starchy water. Also fiona said no fish, or dairy either.

Is it a virus, or a bacterial infection? Antibiotics do absolutely nothing to fight viral infections, and often actually cause diarhhoea.. not to mention allergic reactions. Common myth... not helped by GPs looking to pacify anxious parents by prescribing them for kids with viral infections.

The only cases where they are properly used in viral infections is to help protect against secondary bacterial infection.

Hope all doggies get better soon.

Fiona, sorry I can't give advice as I don't know enough. I can only hope Jake recovers soon. You could try Dorwest's herbal medicine site. If you talk to them they may be able to advise alternatives. Take care,

Fiona what Stuart says is right but I would still take him to a vet anyway especially if he is not improving. Only then can it be determined what , if any medication may be needed. If you do go and are prescribed antibiotics for example you should ask the vet to explain the reasoning. You aren't arguing with him/her you are just trying to make an informed choice. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying don't take antibiotics you just go by what you think is right for him based on the explanation of his condition by the vet. Best of luck and try not to worry too much. (you will anyway but good luck never the less!)

Took Lady and Skye to the vets today things are looking up. They have been given a binding agent.
So fingers crossed no more more poo encrusted kitchen and utility room! Shocked

Poor Jake. How about trying dried cornflakes. Hope he gets better soon, it will take him awhile to get back on his feet.

Scrambled eggs works well to bind them up but only if you are sure it is nothing more serious than a virus. Make sure you are getting the fluids in the dogs an a sachet or two o that electrolade diarrhea treatment will help replace the salts an the minerals lost, just dilute it twice. If your dogs are showing no improvement after 72 hours then a trip to the vet might be needed. Non o them are gonna starve to death i am sure, but hydration is key to recovery.
Make sure you push the fluids.

Believe it or not i even gave my 2 dry bread...seemed to help them and they will eat anything!! Laughing
