Well let me teach you something lady muck! ha ha

No seriously apparently its because with the two of them they weren't absorbing all the goodness from there food so when they were doing the toilet they could still smell the goodness in the poo and this is why they eat it apparently because it still smells nice!! Ive never smelt it but it doesnt look too good to me!

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

well I know it has something to do with a mineral deficiency in their diet ............ or something like that. So they say, but not sure how accurate that is. Ask a vet and a vet will tell you it's simply because they like the taste of it nothing more! Shocked

the boys are doing really really well thanks!
Although by mistake, the other night they got too dinners and Keano had an upset tummy! Seems to have calmed down again though which is great! I just think he has a very very sensitive tummy with regards to what and how much he eats!
They get 5oz a day 2.5 in morning and 2.5 at night!
They love it! And they get there wee bit of raw as well!! Although I dont deal with the chicken part!

My 2 are fed Royal Canin Maxi for the Mature dogs.
I sell pet food for a living and a few years back I started selling Burns.
I liked the sound of it so decided to switch my 2 dogs over to Burns.

What a disaster that was Laughing
I introduced the food gradually over 10 days and although Sadie wasn't too bad Blue was pooing cow pats.
Then he had an accident in the house which went everywhere.
I phoned Burns and they suggested they go back to their normal food for a while & to try again.... no way jose!!

The first day they were back on their Royal Canin the poo was back to normal.

Lots of customers on my pet food round are delighted with Burns but then I suppose every food doesn't suit every dog.
I like the fact that glucosamine & chrondroitin is in the RC food and my 2 at their advanced years have no sign of arthritis.
I put that down to the accumulation of supps over the years. These days they have a capsule each of my supps just to top the level up.

Hi sheryl ,

Burns do a pork and potato based food that seems to be especially good for dogs that have extra sensitive stomachs.
Some dogs have a allergic type sensitivity to cereal based food in the same way some humans do. The potato base in this feed gets round that quite nicely.
Maybe you could ask them to send you a few free samples of this feed to see if it sorts out the problem completely with your lad.

Gwen, we feed Mishka on Royal canin GS 24. She has been on Royal canin since a pup but can be fussy at times so we put the tiniest bit of chicken in her food which encourages her to eat it. From what I read it is a good quality food ( quality price too right enough). We did try to change her a short while ago but took cold feet as she is doing well on this at the moment.

Hi Sam,

i didn't know they did the pork and potato food.
We originally bought the chicken and rice and this time for a change went for fish and rice and they don't hold that as well as they did the chicken one!

My only concern would be that potato's, well I didn't think that they were very good for dogs!!

Please get back to me coz I would love to try and sort the problem, dont get me wrong they are much much better than they used to be but the problems still there.

When i got Keano dressed last week i spoke to the vet AGAIN and he sed just starve him for a day! This is the only answer they can give me, and it works not feeding them for a day but as soon as they start eating again the problem starts back up!!

xx

I use Burns and both my dogs are doing well on it.

Just remember though, Burns dry food swells up more than other dry foods, which means you don't have to use as much of the Burns.

Think about it...if you soak dry food, it swells up, doesn't it? It isn't a bad thing, so don't worry about it.

Hiya Sheryl Smile

There are no problems with toxicity and potatoes in a dogs diet . Obviously you don't feed them the ones that have gone green because green potatoes are poisonous to all of us. but potatoes are a good basic for dogs, in the same way they are for us.
I don't think you would have to worry about Burn's using green ones though Smile

Have a look on this link , you will have to scroll down the page to see the Pork and potato feed.

http://www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk/dog_food.htm

and then give them a bell and have a chat with them. Its good that they recognize that some dogs have a allergic type reaction to some food fillers, cereals being the main offenders because they are added to add bulk and they are a slow release energy food so good in that respect, i am glad that they are on the ball enough to go for the potato option though . Pork is a good source of protein and not a common allergen, nor are potatoes. Venison is another good meat that is not a common allergen either.

You will be amazed at what can be a allergen in food, beef for example is a reasonably common one that most people would never think of. Cereals are prime allergen's in both animals and people.

I appreciate it must be a pain in the butt keep messing with feed but if it turn out to be something as basic as an intolerance too cereals, then you will be chuffed to bits an have a happy dog too. Plus save yourself a fortune in vets fee's .

I wouldn't bother with allergy testing though if i were you. It cost a fortune an in near all the cases i have seen the test result comes back as whatever is fed the most.

Hope this helps ,

Sam

We are changing over to Burns chicken and brown rice. Gradually mixing it in with the Purina they have now. So far so good.

Ordered it from their web site - delivery was quick.
