I gave Otto a smoked bone and he didn't really care but then it didnt have any meat on it so not surprising.

One of the girls that ran our branch of the Greyhound Trust got a huge bag of smoked bones and gave her 3 them one each...........that night she was cleaning up for hours puke ...so I have always avoided the smoked ones for our lot....not sure if they were too rich for the greyhound tummies or not

I have given doogle rib bones before, which he has loved and I recently bought a bag of them from from landywoods (which contained half a cow Shocked ). I gave him one of them then broke the rest up to fit into the freezer. As I was separating the ribs one of them splintered and cut my finger open so it got me thinking about that it could maybe do that to his insides. I searched on the internet and some sites recommended not to give rib bones as they splinter easily and can damage the gut. What to you guys think?

Kai loves bones. We get them from the butchers but I have to say they are more of a better weather treat as he needs to be outside with them.

Isabel,

there is a risk with everything.......dogs have been eating bone since the year dot......it is natural for them.
Cooked bones are dangerous and do splinter......strange that Pets at Home etc sell smoked marrow bones Confused
I believe the benefits of raw bones far out weight the risk.

Would love to try Cadbury on bones.

We have a butcher the family has been using for 20+ years. Sure he would give us some.

Is 6 month cadbury old enough for them? His adult teeth have just finished growing in. Are bones like any other treat, i.e a few a week?

Martin,

yes use bones as a treat a couple of times a week.

Marrow bones will not be eaten by the dog.they will scrape meat from the outside ( great foe r keeping teeth clean and healthy) and lick the marrow from the centre. Rib bone and soft bones the dog will crunch and swallow..........feed small bone at first as bone will firm their stools ...you don't want to over do it and make them constipated......

Hutton's butcher in Condorrat does marrow bones for a donation to charity, eg you put money in whatever collection tin they have on counter (can't remember which one though) and you can get freeze. Best days are Mon/Tue depending on when they do they're boning

Hi

I gave Cadbury a marrow bone today and he loved it, you could see he was really concentrating on getting the marrow out!!

Just wondering, how long should he have the bone at a time?

I gave it to him for an hour or so tonight.

that's fine Martin. After a day though throw the bone away ...... don't let it lie around too long. Smile
They love it don't they, Murphy ended up with a red tongue with licking at the marrow for ages one night! Laughing
