My 2 have not been done, I've never had problems with 2 males together even though lots of people predicted mahem.
I think a strong pack structure in the house stops things developing.
I know I should get them done simply for health reasons. Embarassed

What is the approximate cost of neutering a dog? I know in a conversation with Marie she suggested 'negotiating' a price was a good idea as vets are keen to get your custom.

It basically depends on the size of your dog, this determines how much anesthetic is required. For Star it would cost around £120/130 to get him done but I know it can go up to as much as £180 for the really large breeds!!!

You can try and negotiate prices with smaller practice's etc but for larger practice's like Lawrie I don't think they would budge, I could be wrong of course and there is no harm in trying!

Gypsy took about a day and a half to get over the anesthetic, it affected her quite badly, but still ate fine. where as Inca it took about an hour and the vets called us to get her early. (i still believe it was cos they were sick of hearing her yelping to get out). Laughing

OH that is a relief! I was basing my estimates on what my sister paid - over £500 for her GSD and £400 for her JRT & patterdale cross... Shocked
I know prices differ from area to area, I just didn't expect to be that much difference. I don't think I will tell her lol

I had a dog who ran off regularly for two or three days at a time whenever he caught the scent of a bitch in season. Normally he would never leave my side, his body language would change, nose up tail out and he would stand stock still, then bolt. I knew he would appear filthy, thin, with his eyeballs down to his knees eventually.

He was a rescue dog and older when we got him and I felt it was just not fair to have him 'done'.

With hindsight I would have taken a different decision - responsible dog ownership and all that - I mean did he impregnate any bitches, did he have 'wee bruce puppies' populating Cumbernauld.

Its a hard one though. I do volunteer work for a rescue and one of the conditions for rescuing a dog or bitch is they must be neutered/spayed - there is a good reason for that - no unwanted pups.

Dodge, one of my current dogs, is pretty dominant, and I would'nt like to imagine what he would be like if he was entire. - the dominance thing is another consideration, but perhaps your dog does not have a problem with dominance

My daughter recently got her Basset hound done and he has been brilliant. His behaviour has calmed down a lot.
She would recommend it.

After reading all the advice and reading the booklet we have decide to get Buster 'done' he is going in a week on Monday at 9 o' clock and we should have him back by 4. The vet quoted us £85 because of his size.

Buster is recovering well from his op. the vet said we have to keep him calm and try not to let him jump or run about. But Buster being Buster there is no chance of that happening.
Very Happy

My daughter recently got her Basset hound done as he mounted everything and was always quite frisky. She was quite concerned he would lose his personality too. He has been absolutely fine. Just sore for a couple of days but it has definitely worked. Although he is quieter he still has his cheeky personality.
