When Cuthbert spots another dog coming he often semi crouches and crawls up to them. Am I right in assuming that this is a sign that he is wanting to play as he does not look fearful in any way? (I can't find it in my books, only play bowing)

Doogle did that all the time when he was trying to play with Gypsy. his tail was going like mad but he was still crouching, i just took in to be that he was wanting to play but wanted to show that he knew Gypsy was dominant. Gypsy always growled at him(but she does that to most dogs) so i just left him to it as he wasn't trying to challenge her. he got board and went off to play with Inca. Laughing

Would he not look a bit more cowed or fearful? When he does meet them he does not seem intimidated in any way. I'm not worried at all just curious. Thanks for the reply Kendal that's
interesting to know. Hey I think I'm getting submissive posturing mixed up with something else. Could someone please clarify it for me?

Otto does that if he doesn't know the dog and looks likely to kick his butt. Makes sure he's below the other dog's head and licks them until he's sussed him out better, always dogs that are bigger than him and male.

The rest of them, he meets face on (or face to bum). They can sense when they have to be polite - some dogs give of energy that demands respect.

He's not not scared of the other dog, otherwise he wouldn't approach at all. It's amazing to watch dogs sussing their place in the dog rankings!

Buster goes in head up, tail waving in the wind. If he wants to play after they have had a wee sniff at each other he crouches down at the front with his bum in the air wagging his tail and barking.

Great Danes don't have to be timid on the approach!
