Jilly lost all the hair on her nose last year, it was red raw, very similar looking. The vet thought it was hedge hog flea, it turned out not to be and she carried out various skin test to no avail. However it wasnt until while out walking that we went through a field that was recently sprayed with pecidices (we didnt know it has been recently sprayed at the time) that the reaction flaired up again(almost immediately). Not walked though any such field since and although the hair on her nose has not all grown back, we have had no such flair ups again. Pretty sure the farmers are spraying at this time of year!!!????
Has your friends dog been sniffing around, sticking her nose in long grass, (the wind carries the pecidices), perhaps he has been sniffing in grass at the side of a recently sprayed field or in a bramble bush.
I would tend to try and retrace where he has been in the last few days, ie walks etc |

If your not happy with the vet, go to another one immediately.
I would agree with Marcella, this looks like a reaction to something, almost looks like a chemical burn, but antihists would certainly calm down any allergic reaction.
poor boy, looks really really painful. hope he is better soon _________________ "In a perfect world, every dog would have a home and every home would have a dog." |

Glad he's better. Looks very sore.
FWIW, I won't take Doogle to see Mrs Lawrie for anything important.. dealt with her a couple of times and that was enough for me.. she prescribed meds for Doogle in dosages completely different to the recommended (I know plenty enough about human meds to know she goofed, and wasn't just going 'off script'). Good tip for anyone... check the vet's label against recommended dosages! |

As a woman with many allergies, it looks like contact with something he's allergic to that has physically got on his skin or which is in regular contact with his skin. And if you remove the cause, it will calm down. If you don't or can't, it won't and you have to live your entire life on antihistamines!!! Not that I'm bitter.
As John said, it was something he was breathing it, the effect would be inside or if it was a sting, there wouldn't be so many bumps.
Something on the grass looks a likely candidate - maybe just keep his nose away from grass for a few days or until a big downpour (eh like today!) Stick to sniffing lamposts.
Not that i'm a vet or a dog (watch it!) but I did have to go to Barcelona with a similar reaction round my eyes once - lovely!! |
