Inevitable when you buy a white dog I guess!
Buddy is a mud magnet - he seems to have found an area in the garden where he likes to roll about, particularly after it has rained.
I've decided to accept that it is better to see him happy than having us both go through the trauma of a bath everytime his paws get dirty which leads me to my question.
How frequently should you wash a dog? Can washing too much ruin the coat?

washing a dog to often will wash out all the good oils that the skin produces, i would say like one a month or like every three weeks. i was going to say you will fine it easyer in the summer, but going by this year its about the same
i find that with the girls the mud drys and can be brushed out. if not try going over him with a damp cloth or some baby wipes.
where are the photos of muddy Buddy. _________________ microchiping and grooming www.chipnclip.co.uk

OH THE JOYS COLIN!!!!!!
AS KENDAL SAYS WE CAN LEAVE THE GIRLS AND LET THEM DRY .....SOME MUD FALLS OUT AND THE REST CAN BE BRUSHED.......BUT YEAH IT IS INEVITABLE WHEN YOU HAVE A LIGHT COLOURED DOG THAT IT THEN CAN BECOME A TWO TONE DOG! _________________ Cockapoo's...a little of this, a little of that..........

I judge it on smell. You will know!!!
Otto doesn't mind getting a bath - it's probably about every month to six weeks as he's short haired and gets a hose down and a towelling if he's particularly muddy.
Being brown, he hides it well, but his undercarriage is a mud magnet - which probably explains why he hates the hose....brrrr boaby. |

In my experience Clumber spaniels official colours are white and lemon, or white and orange (daft name I know but I didn't make it up!) but I have found there is a third variation : varying shades of mud and occasional whitish patches!! As you say white dogs and mud seem to go together. _________________ Happiness is watching my dog chase leaves dancing in the breeze. |

You can wash him down with water as much as you want to remove mud, doogle gets hosed down all the time cos he loves mud, just don't use shampoo too often. |

put him in a basin of water and just clean the mucky bits - paws and belly - with warmish water... then let him dry and brush out and remaining bits...

Tilly is also a mud magnet, I guess it doesn't help that not only is she white but she is so close to the ground She tends to clean herself by occasionally rubbing it all over the carpet but usually it just gets brushed out. _________________

Anna i was given a tip by a westie owner about chalk powder or talc that she used on her westie to keep her nice and white, haven't tried it myself but its worth passing on, for all you know it could work on Buddy too Colin. _________________ microchiping and grooming www.chipnclip.co.uk

Talc is a very good tip but you should make sure you use a non scented one or one this is marketed for babies such as Johnsons. Cat owners use it too. It soaks up excess grease and makes them easier to groom as well as keeping their coats nice smelling and white. Cats and dogs can be allergic to the scents used in some brands causing severe skin irritation and hair loss, Johnsons is the only one I can use on my Persians. _________________ Staffies are my life!
