Just joined the forum and looking for a little advice.
I have 2 Border collies and the both have little problems. My main one in Clyde. He is one about 14 months old and has started shadow chasing. My other one is Bobby and he doesn't bother with that.
They both come to work with me and are kept in out side run while I work. They get out 3 times a day for a run about and toilet break. They also get their evening walk and play inside.
I have just had him at the vet today and he is perfect health and he has advised using a dap defuser.
Is there anything else I could try.
thanks. Gordon.

Hiya Gordon, welcome to you!

Sorry I can't help with the shadow chasing, never had a dog or known a dog that does it Shocked I'll be very interested to read what others might be able to recommend to you, good luck with solving it.

Just googled the diffuser though and seen it's supposed to help in stressful situations such as for pets who are afraid of fireworks.....might think about getting some of that as my lot are terrified of them Sad

hey welcome, i work at a kennel and we had a spaniel in not that long ago who is a really bad shadow chaser he barks at it too.
shadow chasing and tail chasing as far as i am aware is a sine of boredom, it sounds like he gets lots of exercise Very Happy , but what kind of games do you play with him, or have you taught him any trick or tasks he can do for you that might occupy his mind.

oh im kendal i share our two year old cockapoos Gypsy and Inca with my mum janis (also on the forum)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Collies are a working breed and REALLY need both physical and mental exercise otherwise they can easily become obsessive.......do they get a mental workout?

Since we got Bobby from the dogs trust 3 months ago we have concentrated on him a lot as he has had problems with other dogs while on a lead. We used to take clyde to clicker training so know what to do but find it a little harder to put in the time needed. but i will be getting back into training again to help him with the shadow chasing.
We had them both with us on a working weekend at the border collie rescue centre in Yorkshire a couple of weeks ago and learned a huge amount in a short time. But it will all take time.
What we do need is to go walks with other dogs to get them more sociable while on a lead. Also either training classes or agility etc.

Hi Gordon
a few folk and their dogs walk in Garrowhill park the dogs are friendly and they all play together. Also at Barrachnie Park at the running track and Early Braes. Our wee dog has great fun there.

hiya! just thought id say that i have a part collie girlie that 13 months old, she has separation anxiety too, mostly barking and messing in the kitchen, we had tried cage training and she kept getting out, even with padlocks on the doors! (she learned how to pull the end of the cage inside!). we got a dap diffuser, stopped using the cage, and shes like a new dog, happy with her blanket in the kitchen with a couple of toys, so id thoroughly recommend a dap diffuser, they are expensive, but get them from petplanet.co.uk and you'll save alot rather than going to pets at home or getting them from your vet. you'll still need to keep up the exercise and id recommend some sort of mental stimulation too like the others have said, such as a stuffed Kong or a puzzle ball with treats in to keep them occupied when your not there and when you are there try tricks and games, Roxy loves them, but i think I'm stuck with a dog that's more intelligent than me lol! shes quicker than me at learning new tricks!
