Brushing Teeth

There is another thread about Teething on the go at the moment and a picture of someone brushing their dogs teeth.

I was buying these sticks cause I thought that was how to do it.

Shoudl you really do this with a toothbrush?

If so, what kind of toothpaste should I be using and how frequently should I be doing this?

As an aside - when does a pups teeth tend to start falling out?

We use dog toothpaste and a double sided toothbrush ie gets both sides at the same time. You can also get a brush that goes on your finger tip.

Or just a bog standard brush....just be gentle. You're supposed to do it once a week...but am not sure from what age and how that affects pups, can't remember what we did.

Our vets do free instruction with the vet nurse on dental hygiene. Must go sometime soon. Don't know if all surgeries do this. Labradors stop teething around the 7 month mark again don't know if this is the same for all breeds.

I've been using a double sided toothbrush and dog toothpaste on Hobbes' teeth since he was a few months old. Acorn pet shops has a good selection of toothbrushes and toothpaste. I tried Hobbes with the brush you put on your finger first, he was very unsure of it. Through perseverance, he now (at 11 months) allows you to brush his teeth for a few seconds while he lies on his back. This only works after a long walk though . . . . hopefully he'll get better as he gets older Wink

I just use a normal toothbrush on dexter about once a week, he dosn't mind me doing this as he too busy trying to eat the chicken flavoured tooth paste Laughing

Right now my two are chewing on raw rib bones.

I have never brushed their teeth. When I got them both as rescue dogs they both had tartar, now they don't.

IMO....bones are the way to go for great canine dental health.
