of course they are real pets lol (Potential fish geek). As long as they are properly cared for the can live a good long life, may I suggest making sure you get a proper tank for the fish and a decent filter and air system. our goldfish tank has been established for a year now and have only had 2 fish deaths, one was of natural causes the other was eaten.
Tropical fish tend to last longer, our svernum (the yellow ones) are 4 our 2 oscars are about 5 and the plek is older we also have a shark and until recently a catfish ( it got in the way of the oscars fighting and sadly died) our oscars and plek could last as long as 14 years.
Fish are for life not just for xmas Laughing Laughing
ok so all this knowledge came from my hubby and not me, I am a dog geek not a fish geek but after you have listened endlessly to him talking you do pick it up Confused

we have goldfish that we have had almost 4 years. actually rescued our fish Smile worked in a student union where the act was a man who could swallow goldfish and bring them back up alive, i think the SSPCA tried to stop this happening now, but we took the fish home, we lost 1 last year, but the other 3 are still going strong.

They always look happier when there is a couple, ours chase each other round the tank, we have a tropical tank also ( and i think that is a lot less work than the goldfish, harder to set up but when you get everything right the tank looks after its self almost, got fish that help with the cleaning Smile Although i have an angel fish that eats anything smaller than it so i havent been able to get new fish in a year that it doesnt see as a snack. Anyone looking for an angelfish Laughing
Our Goldfish are extra large now, so maybe that why they need cleaned out more, but their filter gets dirtier than the tropical tank. Got a few snails to clean their tank also.

Laughing Elizabeth, Emily is just taking the p**s out of me! Don't worry about her she'll go in the water tonight when i get her!

nearer Christmas I will look into a bit more and see what tank etc, just want something simple with little mermaids and toys for it/them!

Can you tell if there a boy or girl I don't want to get one of each and then before you know it they'll take over my bath tub! Laughing Laughing Laughing
