Just in a walk with Dexter. Walking quite calmly past a few men at work signs no problems, then came to a blue and white arrow sign and felt a sudden jerk on the lead with Dexter then slipping his collar with his tail way forward between his legs. Managed to get him to sit and reattach his lead until we got to the sign again he refused to pass. Went back a little and tried to get him to run past it, running looking at me until reached the sign with anchors on again. I then took a fit of the giggles when I had to ask a man with a King Charles spaniel to walk past with me which we did manage with a feet jump to the side. Any ideas how to progress from here? |

try walking past the sign using a treat to entice him past!......or if he has a squeaky toy .....something that will take his attention and repeat it a few times! _________________ Cockapoo's...a little of this, a little of that..........
the perfect combination!

Thanks Kendal and Janis, Tried the treat thing, but he showed no interest once we got within feet of the sign. Can't remember if the roadworks were there when we went past the other night, but this is the first time we have had any problems at all with signs. Can't think he would not have been past signs before but perhaps the first time going past them on a pavement. |

If you anticipate the problem, it becomes even more of a problem ie you tense up or pat him or say "poor boy".
Otto had a slight aversion to a gate where he knows there is an Akita that barks at him. He pushed himself right into me.
So I put myself between him and the gate and just walked past it, bright and breezy, keeping my arm relaxed, head up. Not pandering to his fear.
What I didn't do is touch him or be pitiful to him because that would have just reinforced it...he's fine with it now.
Just keep trying to distract him before you get there and beyond with a toy, a treat or even your voice. |
