If I can be open here a little, I have seen this article before or similar one. People just give up on an animal due to stupidity, there is a number of different reasons but not everyone is 'switched on' in their brain, you really need to in a position where you have exhausted all your options before giving up your animal. Now we have a cat for a reason, it can look after itself, it doesn't need a lot of attention and to be honest it doesn't give much attention back but it gives a little comfort to yourself at times although it will anoy the hell out of us in the kitchen around its bowl. With regards excercise and time with the dog, I am unable to be walking through the night with the dog to give it exercises and well, enjoy having a dog, I must admit crime is very low here so unlikely to run into any problems like that. If I had a dog then I would worry about it daily considering when I am at my busiest I wont be here, so should I leave it out the back? hmmm

Another thing, how can you travel? you need to have a good family or neighbours to help you out.

To give a puppy/kitten as a present is ludicrous, it like getting pregnant and having children, this is a large step in someones life to take on a responsibility and sometimes I even read on this forum people taking on more dogs, I keep thinking to myself, well think it through as a dog is for the life of the dog, not its cuteness but if you love dogs then see how it fits in with the building you live in, your partner, your other pets and how your circumstances are for durations of 5-10years.

Anyway, soap box over... just articles like the one u posted kendal reminds me of many campagnes i have seen in the past. A dog is for the life of the dog, not a gift or a childs toy.

<update> my post is a bit strange above after reading it back, you get the picture tho

Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Bring in licencing for dogs I'd gladly apply and support punishment for those that don't. It's way too easy to get your hands on a dog, in fact animal of any description and the "punishments" for failing in your duty of care or abusing said animal(s) are pathetic.

My heart goes out to every single abused, neglected and abandoned dog out there, not just at Christmas but every single day of the year Crying or Very sad

Well said Dave.......it's a lot of responsibility having a dog and if your not up to putting the work/effort into it then don't get one in the 1st place.......It's so sad to see these wee innocent souls with no one to look after them Sad

DAve- I can only agree. We waited for several years between dogs in order that we were in a position where we could look after one as best we could. Some people are maybe a bit more emotive. I know I could have been immediately after our last dog passed away, but rational brain kicked in and we waited.

another thing winds me up is that this island cannot support any more animals as it struggling with the housing population. keeping the pregnancy of these animals under control is something of a good thing, a difficult decision i know but then with places like Battersea almost at capacity, there is no shortage of places to get animals for a 'good home'.

Guess whats on Sky.fm as i am listening atm, Culture Club! guys in jail now isn't he!?

Dave's right - there are just many people out there who get a dog on a whim and have no idea what they're taking on or the brains sadly. Then blame the dog when it all goes wrong.

You just have to watch a few episodes of Dog Borstal to see numpties who have created monsters.

We took months to research breeds and knew what we were taking on...and he's pretty much as it said on the tin. "Do not get this breed if you are a lazy sod or like to be alone." There is lots of info and advice out there if you look, but I don't think everyone does. They get a dog because they like the look of it.

yes that's part of it for everyone - but it shouldn't be the key factor.

Fortunately my dog does match my decor tho Laughing

Tilly has already broken into my wardrobe and opened half the presents, not going to send her away for that. But thank god she matches the furniture Laughing
