Hi there,
We have just had our 8 week old pups inoculated with their first jab, the vet told us the next would be at 12 weeks and they shouldn't socialize with other dogs for 2 weeks after that.
I'm concerned that that will make them 14 weeks old before we can introduce other dogs, isn't that a bit late.. we are doing all the other stuff - hoover, children, dishwasher, lead etc but I know how important the other dog's will be.
Do you think it will be OK?
Thanks from a forever worried new puppy owner.

It was OK for us - better a slightly late socialised pup than one who picks up a nasty illness
They're still young enough to learn and socialise/play well, in fact could be better that they are a little older with some breeds as they usually have learned some manners by that age _________________ Staffies are my life! Visit us at www.staffies.co.uk |

I think its a fine line between the socialising and the risk of picking up something.
With Hektor, the Vet said that as long as it was with other dogs that we knew were vaccinated, and not in places where unknown dogs were known to frequent, especially grassy areas, it would probably be Ok but that it was MY decision.
I took Hektor up to the school at busy times when there was a lot of noise and people, that helped. |

I personally had Luka in amongst dogs that I knew were inocculated even after his 1st jag and before he got his 2nd but again this was our choice and our risk, tho im a believer of building up resistance and sometimes I think things being too clean etc arent a good idea....ok my excuse for not doing housework, but doesnt work, I still have to do it _________________ lurchers Pixel and Zev and whippet, Fen

I think it will be ok to wait, he will still be really young, and it is better than him catching something. Just because a dog has been vaccinated it can still carry the disease. Hope all goes well. |

Mmm lots of different opinions.
The real issue isn't the socialization, it's the fact that they are bouncing off the walls, they need the structure and discipline of a walk.
We have 2 pups and make sure that we separate them each night, this gives them a chance to get some space, it also lets us do some training with them when they don't distract each other.. but separate walks would be the ideal time to bond with them.
I think I will wait at least until after the second jab, I'm not sure if I could hold out another 2 weeks after that..
Thanks for the advice.

I wouldn't walk the pups in public places until after their 2nd jag but I think it is ok to mix with other dogs that you know are vaccinated. Pups will have some immunity passed on from their mother and I have mixed my pups with family dogs in the past. I think there are many things to consider and you will hear lots of different advice but it is only a few weeks to wait.....
Do you have an enclosed garden that you can let then run about in and maybe do a bit of training and let them let off some steam?
As far as socialization goes... 14 weeks is still young and I don't think that will be a problem if you wait _________________ Border Terriers........

Yes, we have an enclosed garden, they have been out in that for the last 2 weeks (since we got them) and they love it.
We have been doing some leash training with them, but at the moment it's just to tempting for them to eat the leash, still they don't mind it on which is a good start.
One good thing about keeping them in for longer is that we are doing loads of training with them, it helps to keep them occupied and seems to tire them out a bit.
I do have an issue with Tess though, she seems to be strangely attracted to eating everything she can, it's not just chewing, she will come in with mouthful of grass and weeds. The big issue is that we are finding stones in her mouth, she doesn't seem to want to swallow them but it's got me really worried, any advice?

all the dogs that go to the training class have to be inoculated and therefore are safe so i would think it safe to socialise!
as shirley and kendal said luca and echo were there and mixing from 7 and 8 weeks old! _________________ Cockapoo's...a little of this, a little of that..........

Hi Dan,
http://www.photobox.co.uk/my/album?album_id=89759517
They are English Springer Spaniels called Jake and Tess, in the pictures they are 7 weeks old, but in the last week they have changed so much, their spots are coming up and Tess is getting a really dark face.

We didn't collect Dexter from our breeder until he was 14 weeks old and had his injections. It doesn't appear to have affected his socialisation skills. We just made sure that after we collected him he mixed every day with different dogs at the park and training school walks. We were luckier with the weather as he was 14 weeks old in July so it was easier to meet other people, children, dogs and other animals in the evening and through the day. I wouldn't worry about waiting until yours are 14 weeks old. Other dogs will still give them puppy status until they are 6 months old and allow a few social faux pas. |
