The agility dogs are taught to get excited....this is called putting them in drive....same way a dog gets excited about chasing a ball. You see this at the club when the flyball comes out or we practice a retrieve...the dogs change from placid and quiet to wound up and loud
This does not make the dog disobedient but they seem to accept that having an aggressive barking dog is OK as long as it can go round the agility course quickly. There has to be a good balance.
Some top competition dogs when they are not working can display similar traits, as can working sheep dogs, police dogs etc

Sounds like we need to try some agility in the senior class?
This is the kind of feedback that the forum is perfect for!
It is far easier for everyone to voice their opinions here. If I don't know I can't act.......I am more than happy to adjust the last classes to suit what everyone wants......I know the dogs (and handlers) can end up getting bored with the same thing.

Hi,
let me know how they like it!
We are looking at getting floor mats so the dogs don't slip.....then we can try more things like this on a Tuesday night. _________________ John Thomson

I enquired a while back about agility and flyball, the nearest class I found was Stirling. They were all for me joining until I mentioned she was a Stafford then I was refused. My first conversation was based around what my dog could do, I explained we did some basic agility at home and so forth, the dog can jump over 6ft from a sitting position and is very focused, not barky just focused with lots of drive and obedient to the point she forgets everything around her. Especially with toys and so forth I believed and still do she would make an excellent agility dog. Well it all went smoothly until I mentioned her breed and I was told there would probably be other clubs better suited to our needs (or breeds). I wasnt told as such we could not join but that is what was implied. Oh and although there were places when I inquired about it there were none left by the time our call ended.
I just made my own course, Aframe, hurdles and weaves we do it for ourselves more than anytyhing just disappointed in the dog world they can be as prejudice as in the human. |

i would offer the jumps that i am getting but they are designed to stick into the ground rather than stand on there own, (they where the cheaper option for us starting out and easy-er to store) as they are just 6 poles that make two jumps.
if i can make a base for them then i could try to bring them it. that is one of my plans for the summer. |
