Matt Allwright and Dan Penteado are hunting and confronting more rogues. They investigate pet shops and dog breeders who sell sick puppies. The Rogue Traders team go undercover to buy three puppies from establishments which have been reported to the RSPCA or trading standards. One of the puppies cost 350 pounds and was bought as a pedigree King Charles spaniel. But within a few days it falls ill with Parvo virus, a severe intestinal infection, and has to be put down.

Matt and the team reveal that in many cases, the paperwork is inadequate to prove a puppy's pedigree, or that it has been properly vaccinated. One of the dogs purchased by the Rogue Traders team had a docked tail, a procedure which was made illegal in England, Scotland and Wales in 2007.

When Matt confronts one puppy farm, the breeder attempts to hold the team captive. It takes a visit by the police to get them released.

Step too far for me - I might be able to read about this stuff now but NO WAY can I watch it - nor would you want me to given the online rant that WOULD inevitably follow! Wink

John,

As I understand it the law states that IF the dogs are going to be used as "working" dogs then the tails CAN still be legally docked BUT it MUST be done by a qualified vet and said vet has to provide a signed declaration/statement/certificate confirming THEY docked the tail in accordance with legislation.

It is illegal for anyone other than a qualified vet to tail dock and ONLY if the owners confirm the above - given what else goes on in this country though tail docking WILL still be carried out the old fashioned way AND people will get round the legislation easily enough.

Personally the first time I saw a Rottie and a Boxer with a tail I thought they looked really weird but now I've gotten used to it and think only working dogs should be docked - for them it's cruel to leave the tails intact otherwise I feel they should be left as nature intended. Cool

Just watched the programme. Glad there is some education going on as to what is best to investigate when purchasing a puppy and some encouragement to look at rescue centres. Education for the general public seems to be a recurring theme on the forum. I know the dogs trust do a lot of good work and have indeed visited my sons school. I think more of this is required but unfortunately will take a whole generation to see lasting benefits. All we can do is continue to support organisations like the dogs trust and keep increasing awareness. I know for a fact that our breeder would be horrified to see this programme. We had to go through a 0 minute conversation before we went to see the puppies, we were not allowed to handle the puppies until they were vaccinated, even then there was disinfectant handwashing to go through. We were delighted that such good care was being taken of our future puppy and were happy to go through the process. Beggers belief that people would purchase a puppy from any breeder who has no compassion for the puppies.

Scottish Great Dane Rescue have seen the results of puppy farming. One 'breeder' phoned the rescue and told them to collect 4 unwanted dogs or her husband was going to take them out and shoot them.

OMG I could not be the one going to pick the dogs up. I would want to shoot the 'farmers'.

AAAAAARGH! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

They have been reported but as yet no action has been taken against them. They also have horses and were previously reported for not taking proper care of them. People just do not do enough research not just re the breed but also the breeder.

Jack

In Scotland even working dogs are not allowed their tails docked, it is a blanket ban up here.

Even in England it tends to be actual farm or field dog breeds that still get their tails docked such as terriers or hounds.
