Hi folks, this might seem a stupid question but...

When training, walking to heel, rewarding etc. everything happens from the left, but what if you have more than one dog?

I keep Mylo on my left when walking on the lead and Sasha on the right. It keeps them apart (stops Mylo trying to jump on poor Sasha) and keeps things consistent for Mylo when I'm trying hard to train him properly.

So, should I alternate sides or keep Mylo the left dog and Sasha on the right or keep them both on the left?

God help me if I ever get another dog! Smile

I suppose it depends on the dogs
I keep Orla left and Buddy on the right. Orla will now only walk on the left, Buddy is ambidextrous
If I walk them together on the same side, Orla 'attacks' Buddy when we meet other dogs to stop him barking and spoiling the fun Confused

I walk both my Great Danes, Basil and Poppy on the left together. I often put them on a joiner so they are both on 1 lead. I find they adjust to what is best for them within the limitations you put on them if you persist.
I generally walk 2 dogs together. when I had 4 I would walk 2 either side unless they were off lead when they all seem to gravitate to the left.

I usually have Pixel on my left and Luka on my right but only cause my right is slightly stronger, but they will walk either side no probs and still know at training to walk to my left

Girls are always on my right either on a lead each or with a coupler and Sykes is always on my left....and it's ALWAYS the left I have to correct. It's made harder as he has never liked walking to closely to our side from puppy hood. His nasty brothers and sisters bullied him and I think he fears getting trodden on Sad

Walking on the left is just 'tradition' in dog training as far as I know.
It would be a nightmare trying to call commands if some were on the left and some on the right.

For a relaxed walk outside I do not correct my two if the do not stay on the left........the only thing I correct for is pulling. However if we approach a road or another dog I give a 'close ' command and expect both to come into a close heel position on my left.

If anytime you praise or treat your dog you always do it on the left and anytime your dog goes to your right you ignore it they quickly learn to come to the left.
