i know there are a few in here who do this or are interested in it...

We were down at the CLA Game Fair at the weekend and almost every visitor in the place had a dog...

Loads of great trials and demonstrations were on show and Giles was watching every one of them taking note.

Ok, ok, i have a lapdog... but he IS a spaniel!

I bought him a whistle and am looking forward to training him as he's going down to stay with his gundog 'cousin' in august while we're away on holiday.

I had my camera in the car so didnt get any shots - only a video of working field clumbers doing their thing... Cuthbert take note!

edit to add: The owner didnt mean to throw the dummy so close to the fence. The dog couldnt get his head out with the dummy in its mouth Laughing

Very interesting Ross. Cuthbert has now decided to "forget" all his training when we are outdoors so I have decided to get a trainer to help us with field work.

Catch you soon.

We got a gundog training manual and did some work with dummies...I can get otto to sit and stay and ignore dummies being thrown over him until he's told to get it....his return is a bit crap though, he tends to run off with it, but it's coming.

the manual was useful though - best bit of advice "never let a gundog into your biggest secret - that you'll never catch them" Laughing

It's just instinctive to them, I love seeing him tune right in to what he was bred for and that environment.

Impressive with 2 of them though. Now there's a challenge.

I tried the dummy trick the other night with Giles.

With the stick and ball Ive been playing with he will retrieve and place the ball at my feet, but with the dummy, he will fetch and then run away - probably because he thinks its a new teddy type toy.

what does it say in your book for the single, double long pip commands - what are they?

No, they have the scurry running all day and there is a competition, but anyone can have a go, so we did Very Happy

they throw the dummy, dog goes gets it and brings it back, then they do it again over the fence, fastest time wins.....we could be fastest but Pixel doesnt do retrieve very well Laughing

I'll have a look. We'd already trained him that 2 blasts of the whistle means "return from wherever you are and whatever you're doing"....I love the whistle. We need to work him more because he loves it. It's like having a Ferrari and not driving it fast . Secretly I think Ian would like a wax jacket and a gun!!

Didn't even have to try to teach otto to find things.

Rudi's dad was a working champion (dog is also Otto's grandad) so I think he'll need it even more.

I'd love to take my 2 to game fairs, but I always seem to hear about them after the event!

Think Tess would be good! Belle? Least said the better, she's a wee bit slow and lazy!
