We raised £6k between us 2 years ago to go hillwalking in Peru and to Machu Picchu for Maggies and by far and away the easiest way of making money was to hold a disco or a celidih. We raised £2k alone by having 2 events, one in Ian's local town, and one in mine.
The trick is to not pay for anything and get as many people there as possible at £5 a ticket which people will happily pay in return for a fun night out.
I had a ceilidh - my sister's firm paid for the band, all I had to do in return was put their names on the ticket. I sent a story in on it to the local paper and a couple of old school friends came along.
I got a venue that didn't charge for the room, they make the profit on the drink (local hotels and men's clubs are good for doing this) and they also provided soup and stovies for free.
I got local companies to gives us gifts for a raffle and on the night I put a couple of bottles of whisky on the dance floor at the break and the challenge was to get a £1 coin nearest the bottle to win. Men will spend at least £10 trying to get it as it's addictive.
People are very generous at these events as they have a laugh, and drink usually loosens the pockets. And get as many people as possible roped in. My mum and sister did a lot to help with the ceilidh and they also did wee fundraisers at work for me eg guess the teddy's birthday.
