Hi,

I was thinking about getting a second dog to keep Skye company. There is a guy advertising a one year old Beagle/Jack Russell cross. He is not selling it but want it to go to a good home.

When I phoned him he said that for the first 6 months he was at home with the dog because he was off ill. Now he is back at work the dog howls throughout the day.

I definately dont want to buy a dog that will howl all day. Do you think that the company of Skye would be enough to stop this. I would have leave it in the house during the day and would pop in at lunchtime. What do you think, could I be taking on someone elses problems.

The advert is on Epupz and the people stay in Maybole in Ayrshire.

Thanks

Frances Cairney

beagles are natural howlers, they were bred to make alot of noise on the hunt. they also have quite a painful sounding howl it really sounds like they are in pain or their is something wrong. i don't know if this would be toned down by the fact that it is crossed with a jack. i think if your taking it on you need to be prepared that there might be alot of work involved in correcting the behavior. what you don't want is for the new dog to make sky to start barking and crying when your out.

Theres really know way of knowing until it was tried and tested. Our Muffin has seperation anxiety and barks the house down while getting in a right state when Im away at work. Shes very much a people dog and isnt too interested in other dogs so we didnt think there was anyway to help her. We found when she was at Janis' house with the Gypsy Inca and Echo in their crate she would bark, but if she was with them she would only rarely bark. we tested this out at my flat and sure enough when she was by herself she would bark, when any other dog was with her she wouldn't bark. We now taken the leap in getting Totts and so far so good Muffin has been quiet.

Best of luck

Thanks Kendal,

My main worry was that it made Skye unsettled and I didnt know that most Beagles have a tendancy to howl. I will definately not go to that one.

We would like another dog to keep Skye company. We maybe go to Dogs Trust, I presume they would look at what would be suitable for us.

Do you work in Kennels somewhere Kendal as we were thinking about booking Skye into one for September weekend?

Thanks again.

Frances

yeah they will probably be able to help you find a dog to fit in with sky.

not all beagles are like that, but almost all the ones we get at the kennels bar maybe 2 or 3 can be very bad howlers. but the fact that this is the reason he is giving the dog up, gives the impression that he will need alot of work, and his new owner needs to be prepared for that.

i work at Crowbank kennels, the September weekend books up quick and early in the year, so i would suggest calling up and going for a viewing to see what you think before booking fairly soon.

Hi Laura-Anne & Kendal,

Thanks for both your replies.

Going over to dogs trust tomorrow afternoon for a wee visit. Changed mind about Beagle but will look at other dogs.

Have booked Skye into kennels for September and will visit them tomorrow morning also.

Maybe see you there.

Thanks again.

Theres a lot of beautiful wee dogs at Dogs Trust Smile

Good luck, If you fill in an re homing questionnaire they will see you quicker and let you have a look round the kennels on the day usually. You need to fill in the same questionnaire when you visit the kennels so you're just cutting out the fist step tomorrow.

Hiya,

Got Skye sorted out at Kennels for September.

Also went to Dogs Trust. See a lovely wee Jack Russell cross called Alphie but they didn't think it was suitable for us. Anyway, possibility of another Westie. They are checking it out for a week and if it is okay then we will be the first ones to see it. It is age 4 and is called Sophie. That is all we know about her at the moment. Will let you know how we get on. Fingers crossed.

Frances

Hiya,

Was not impressed with Dogs Trust. They promised us first refusal on a wee Westie Sophie age 4. When they didnt call me, I phoned and was advised that the dog had been given to someone else. The Manager asked us to come in and see her on Saturday last week and we arrange a time. When we got there she wasnt in.

Anyway, went to West Yorkshire on Sunday last week and bought a wee puppy. She is a cross between a Coton De Tuleur and a Toy Poodle. She looks like a miniature retreiver. She is hypoallergenic and we have called her Maisie. Skye is getting on great with her. At the moment they are both squashed into Maisie's bed. It is so cute. Laughing

Glad I didnt go for a Beagle after all. I have spoken to a good few people who have them and they all howl. That would drive me crazy.

Thanks for all your help.

Aww sounds gorgeous, cant wait to see a pic Smile

West yorkshire is crazy for selling dogs. There are actually so many breeders there its ridiculous, thats where i was going to buy the min. schnauzer from and where we eventually got Totts from.
