maxxy behavioural problems

Hey guys sorry not been on in a while, hope to be back soon. Having some problems with Maxxy, he's having severe separation anxiety, and is becoming aggressive, vet has recommended a behaviourist, and he's on some medication Zylkene. I think i've tried just about everything i can think of but i was wondering if anyone has any ideas maybe ive missed something out??

hey sorry to hear this...but the first thing i would say would be to give the behaviorist a wide berth as it will cost you a fortune.

have you tried popping him into a crate while you are still in the house ........leave him for about 5 mins and don't make eye contact or talk to him while in the crate. on return to the crate on his release make a fuss of him but only release him if he has been quiet......then continue this increasing the time he is left alone.

try leaving him with possibly an old t shirt that has your scent in the crate. also possibly a kong filled with treats to occupy him

i'm sure others will give you ideas.

what is he becoming aggressive to or over, is it him being defensive or nerves or possessive over objects. can you pin point what he reacts to. ?

I agree with the advice given.........slowly get Maxxy used to being left in the crate for at first short and then increasingly longer periods.

Can u give a lot more info on what hes reacting to etc. what is his routine? when does he become aggressive? How is he reacting in his seperation anxiety ie. crying, barking, sick?

Agree with crates.

Ive had an aggressive collie (and failed him ) Muffy is a collie cross and had severe separation anxiety so know exactly what ur going through

hey guys thanks for advice, tried leaving him in crate and he just yowls n whines constantly, ignores any objects put in. he's aggressive with strangers and men in particular, think this is because when he was neutered, the wound gt infected and vet picked him up by the 'privates' and he bit the vet as a result, ever since, he's been aggressive. and also extremely aggressive with dogs while in the vets but not outside off the lead.

don't think much of the vet picking him up by the privates! certainly wouldn't be back to see him!

in the crate howling.........have you tried covering the crate with a big blanket.....might calm him if he's in the dark!

remember if you release him from the crate when he's howls he will know that he's won and will continue til he gets out! you only let him out when he is quiet!

the other thing i have done with mine when they were puppies was pop them the crate and sat next to the crate but no eye contact .....i generally read or sat on the laptop....for mine it worked knowing that i wasn't far away and then went to the loo, for a cuppa etc and increased the time away.

it's trail and error for every dog.....keep up the socialisation of both dog and human thoough!
