Watch out for the glass

Hi everyone,

Sure not everyone has heard but today after class Franklin badly injured his paw on some glass outside the Westfield community halls.

Just thought I'd give you a little update on the situation and also to make sure everyone else keeps an eye out for the glass that seems to be littered around the halls at the moment.

Well we had to take Franklin to Lawrie Veterinary Practice as he was bleeding badly, we got him to the vets and waited about for a bit until the vets got there during which time Franklin sat next to me at the vets door with his paw in my hand holding the pad together.

He got taken in, sedated and then we had to leave him, this was one of the hardest thing's I have ever had to do, he was shaking with the sedative and trying to get up to come with me but we had to leave him so the vet could operate on his pad.

We got him back a few hours later.

So the damage. Franklin needed 14 stitches to keep his pad on including a 6 in the muscle as this was cut clean through. Looks like there wont be any lasting damage as long as we can keep him off the foot and with a hyper great dane this isnt so easy.

The cut was 2 inches across from one corner of his pad to the other and 3 inches deep almost down to the bone.

Franklin was a complete star, he didn't complain once even when the vet was prodding about inside the cut and this was before the pain relief.

All in all it cost £254 which I thought was rather expensive but we do pay insurance so it wont hit us too much. I dont mind paying aslong as he is ok.

If I could get my hands on the idiots that smashed that bottle outside the club franklin wouldn't be the only one that would need hospital treatment.

We have him home now and he is sleeping but keeps waking up, trying to walk, banging in to the wall or door then giving up and going back to bed.

That's awful
Poor Franklin. That's one of the cruelest places for a dog to have a cut. They rely on being able to put pressure on their pads so much. I have frequently had to avoid glass with Cleo and Tubbs. It's disgusting how little people, if you can call them that, think when they do these mindless things.
And poor Franklin got the worst of it!
I hope he feels better soon. .....And I hope the idiots who caused it get what they deserve!

What a terrible thing to happen to the poor, blameless dog! I am horrified and completely agree that these morons need a lesson in humanity. I hope poor Franklin is not in too much pain, and that he will recover quickly. Poor big fellow.

Thanks Teresa & Sharon. He is feeling sorry for himself as the meds are starting to wear off. He can't keep his head up but won't stop trying and keeps passing out. Had to call the vet again there as we were concerned about him as he keeps going in to the praying position and peed himself while sleeping but we have to just keep a close eye on him and make sure he doesn't have or get bloat.

It'll maybe take him a while to get over the sedative effect although the pain killing effect will be wearing off. Keep us posted on how he is.

Poor Franklin! We hope he's back to normal soon. It's horrible when they're hurt or unwell.

OMG that's awful...i wasn't aware that lawrie's vet would even be open... i thought you would have been sent through to the PDSA in shamrock street glasgow. Do you think a copy of the bill and a stern letter to the council would do anything? doubt it but maybe worth a go. keep us posted to how the big guy is! xx

Poor franklin!!!!! There's always a lot of glass at the corner there.....it's a nightmare!!! Thankfully, although Alfie seems to make a beeline for glass, he's never done any real damage!
Hope he's back up and about in no time.... I'm sure he's getting spoiled to make up for it!!!
I just think, if they could sell buckfast in plastic bottles it would save a lot of dogs paws....it's always green glass that's smashed around!!! As far as I'm aware there's been lots of petitions etc but they won't change!!

Awww that is so awful. Poor boy. Breagha will kiss him better when she sees him. I m always dodging around glass just at the corner as you turn into the entrance for centre. I hope he's back to his usual self soon.

Oh the poor fellow! I am sorry, but I just had to smile at the picture - it is just so cute to see him with his sore paw held up - almost child-like and those eyes..... Doesn't make it less awful what happened though. Hope he heals up soon.
