Star isn't dominant or aggressive but the reason I got Star a prong was his pulling when on a lead. Although I have tried every trick in the book to get him to stop, I spent over an hour once stopping and changing direction etc and he didn't care one bit. I've actually had blisters on my hands from where he had been pulling at the lead. He is a smaller dog but very very strong and on several occasions has pulled Jenna straight off her feet. I tried a half check and it actually made things worse, I'm sure he was turning blue!!! He had his prong on for the first time last night and what a difference! I only had it on the "dead ring" and he was as good as gold. I don't think we will have it on 100% of the time, only at training and a few walks.

I'm the same as you fiona, we have tried everything to stop doogle pulling and he pulls quite hard, nothing seems to work. I tried the prongs last night and they have helped alot. I think it is probably better than yanking on his neck. If I put a half-check on i'm sure he would strangle himself!! If he pulls with them on then it is uncomfortable for him and he stops, it doesn't cause him any damage. When I first saw prongs I thought they looked barbaric, but john demonstrated it on my arm to show that it doesn't damage them it is just uncomfortable if they pull.

Phoebe, I cant believe it - I have just picked up Bob and Dodge from your kennels an hour ago - I hope the owner is telling me whole truths and they are good boys. She said they are sooooo loud, they both bark, but enjoy every woof.

When we dropped them off - off they trotted with Danna without a single look back at us - cheeky devils, but they did make a huge fuss of us when they knew we were there to collect them - dodge was howling like a wolf.

I wish I had known you were there before I had gone off, I would have felt better.

Kirsty,
I wasn´t working the last two weeks, because after the busy summer holidays Danna and Calum gave me a little break. Laughing But I know the two of yours from the last time in July and be sure, they enjoyed their time in the kennels very much! When I started working there, I was actually really surprised, how good most of the dogs are doing in the kennels. Next time, when I am going to visit my family for a few days, I will put Sony in as well. Very Happy

I have never used one......however I have a friend/customer who uses one on a doberman.....the dog is a yard dog who roams free but was going into a nearby field and worrying the sheep ( farmers are allows to shoot dogs that do this!). So he tried a spray collar and it worked extremely well, the dog quickly started to come back when the 'beep' was used as he knew the next thing that would happen was the spray.........this worked when the dog was out of sight /earshot.

Like any correction is has to be just enough of a stimulation to change the dogs behavior or re-direct its thoughts back to listening to the handler.

just my opinion.

John,
I used one with Sony, when she was always escaping to go for deer hunting. Confused It worked perfectly after 3 times spraying, she always came back. I could imagine, that it might be a good alternative to a prong in some cases.

Well mine is here so I'll be using it tomorrow, I'll bring it to the walk to make sure that I am fitting it correctly. Can't wait to go out a walk and not have Dora pulling my arm out of it's socket because a car has driven past, or we are passing a garden with a dog in it or there are rabbits about, the rest of the time she is fine and I have tried everything just like Fiona changing direction, stopping and standing every few stepps, using the heel command when correcting her and nothing worked until we tried the prong, she is a small dog but very strong and I would never let a small child hold her as she would pull them off there feet, this will mean that my cousins boys can walk her and I can relax

Lindy - good luck with the collar tomorrow. You will see an immediate difference.

I dont use mine all the time now, but Dodge was pulling like a train today, so his is going back on. I am using one on bob at present to try to stop his barking at other dogs. But this is not helping when he is in the car and driving me nuts barking at any dog he passes.

I may have to try a remote collar - and am just about to look into different ones.

Me too. If people dont like prongs well as long as they can see that some people and some dogs MAY need them, and although they dont like them, not to condem those who do use them PROPERLY. Everything can be abused.

I never condemned anyone in any way!
I didn´t knew, that a sentence like "I´m not a friends of prongs" would rise such a debate in this forum. I´m sorry if anyone felt judged or offended by that. I know that I can be happy to have such an easy, lovely doggy, which doesn´t need things like that.

Pheobe,

I know you didn't condemn any one. The subject of collars raises emotions from both sides of the debate.

Most dogs will never need anything more than a flat collar and will be perfectly happy.
As you know some will need a little more to stop them being 'out of control'.

Great to hear everyones views on this.............although it depends on your dog as to whether you think they are good or not Laughing

No Pheobe im not thinking you thought that about the collars, I know some people who have condemed people for using them I wasnt even thinking on the forum or club, just in general.
I think I just worded it wrong Embarassed

I dont have a problem if people dont like them or wouldnt use one. I wouldnt use an electric collar but I know people who have, its usually the gundog folk I think, again im not saying they abuse them, or use them wrong, electric collars are just my thing I dont like, though im so accident prone I would zap myself Laughing I hate electricity anyway, it scares me. I have had a jab from the Christmas tree lights and its not funny..... well ok it was after it Laughing
