3 months ago we went to the vet thinking both dogs were going to get neutered and the vet said because Keano is the more dominant one leave him and only get Coby done, Coby's hormones will calm down and he wont be so bothered about fighting for top dog! So that's what we did going on his advise! But now we're not sure if that is a good idea because when we're down the park, they always come back however if Keano does go near a female dog(or male to be honest) he tries to mount them!
Its not fair on him coz he gets all excited .... Embarassed
My only concern is that if we get Keano neutered it may coz more problems or rise problems that we are starting to iron out!
What do you guys think????

Sheryl,
I think I would consider getting Keano neutered. Or possibly even both dogs.

It's a hard decision to make. Good luck Very Happy

Sorry Deborah,
Don't think that message was too clear we got Coby neutered 3/4 months ago but are not sure now if we should go ahead and get Keano neutered aswell?

sheryl

i don't know much about male dogs but i think that if you got them both done then they would be on the same level and could work out who is dominant more fairly.

Thanx for replying Kendal.
Keano has been more dominant out of the 2 since they were puppy's, then one of the times they were fighting Coby managed to get the better of Keano and cost us a large amount of money and Keano the tip of his ear! And coz he 'won' that time he thought if he carried on then Keano would back down (we stopped that before it happened) and got him neutered!
I dont want to bring them down to the same level again in case the fighting starts and one of them ends up seriously physically hurt or mentally hurt, but..... at the same time dont know if it would be fairer on Keano beacuse he is mounting other dogs!! Embarassed
CONFUSED VERY CONFUSED Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation

Hi,

mounting can and often does relate to dominance .....hence dog try to mount people Embarassed .
As time goes by keeping the pack order strong will help this.....

John

PS Sheryl, don't worry to much about about small difference between what I say compared to the Dog Listener DVD........the general message is the same!

If not then poor keano will sadly be going to the vet!!

Hi Sheryl,
I noticed on Tuesday night that Keano had what looked like an ordinary collar on. Have you tried the one that is only a half choke chain? Can't remember the name but I use them on Mishka (German shepherd) and Moli( Bichon). It is the noise of the chain they react to when you correct them.

Just a thought Smile

We havent tried that to be honest, Keano's only a year and a half old and already he's had bout 9 different collars lol.
Ive read up on choke chains though and not alot of people would recommend them unless you really know what your doing wit them! But Eleanor showed us one at class that was like a normal collar but had a chain attached but the chain didn't tighten around his neck!!
Will that scare him coz I dont want him to be scared? Coz thats when he starts to get aggressive!!

Thats the type I meant. I don't think it will scare him. I find the small noise the chain makes as you correct them helps distract their attention from whatever they have it on. Very Happy

Hi Sheryl,

I don't think the noise of the chain would scare him in any way.
You will find half check chains in any pet shop........Poundland in Cumbernauld also have them priced £1

You will find ( as we all do!) there will be good and bad days.....sometimes you will feel as if things are getting better.....sometimes they will drive you mad.....be consistent with your pack prder and things will slowly improve........

Have a great weekend

John

Hi Sheryl,

I find Mishka and Moli can be a little ' off' on a full moon. Don't know if there is anything in it or we just grab at straws to make us feel better.

Mishka can either be really good at class or not!!!!!!

Maybe................................ It's us that have the problems and not the dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Keep your chin up Wink

Looong reply...

Re: neutering: We had Leo done and will be sorting Shadow out after the summer, it does make the dogs calm down a bit and prevents nasty illnesses when they're older (our last dog had a lot of health problems caused by hormones once he reached age 6/7). I reckon you're more likely to get problems later if you *don't* have him done than if you leave him as he is! I'm afraid you might be stuck with the mounting behaviour though- Leo still does it out of force of habit. Kendal is right about the dominance thing though- better to have both the same and let them decide between themselves. [I think Shadow is going to end up being the boss at our house because he just beats Leo up!]

Re: collars - Leo has been through dozens, it's just a matter of finding one that works and doesn't pull all their hair out - no shortcuts unfortunately! We've ended up with a half check which is pretty good and he does respond to it (occasionally! - He is actually reasonably calm on his walks, hard though that may be to believe from his behaviour at class!)
