I found a tick on Murphy today........most probably from the hill walk at the weekend.so if you were with us it might be worth checking your dogs just incase they have picked up any as well _________________ John Thomson

ticks are wee buggers! can be quite hard to find on the longer coated dogs too. should hopefully be too cold for them soon. _________________ your cat will never annoy by barking at 3am, he wont attack the postman or eat the curtains, although he may climb them to see how the room looks from the ceiling... |

I got it off him today Suzanne (wee buggers that's polite compared to what we said when we saw it!)
I went to Acorn Pets to get a tick twister but they didn't have any, instead they had Tick Picks. Anyhow this wee gadget got it off, but my word this beastie had one helluva grip! It was a big tick. When I got it off I watched it wriggle about with it's wee claws grasping away .......................... then smashed it's head in with my boots! |

Danny and Jack seem to pick up far too many 'friends' as I refer to ticks!! Surgical Spirit. strong resolve and a good pair of tweezers works well - used to use Vodka as advised by a farmer - on the tick - not me - but Surgical Spirit is cheaper and as yet I haven't tried to drink it. As long as you make sure both head and legs are removed all will be well - we don't have Lyme Disease in Scotland as yet as far as I am aware. _________________ No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does - Christopher Morley |

My grandad used to just use a fag and a pair of tweezers, burn the little blighters bum it would retract it's grip and twist it out with the tweezers then like you say Mary dab a bit of alcohol on it to sterilize it Think I'd just buy a tick twister and a good flea and tick treatment. To be honest come ever spring I treat my tow ever 6 or 8 weeks as I am always out walking on the countryside so it's easier than pulling ticks out all the time. |

Unfortunately, we do And as the climate is changing, the prevalence is increasing. |

The alcohol causes the little horrors to release their grip - and/or their inhibitions.... also to sterilise the area after removal. I have read some reservations about this way ... but it has always worked for my boys. _________________ No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does - Christopher Morley |

Neither of mine have had a tick, thank god. Neither have the cats. I have removed a couple from dogs i've groomed in the past though. |

Mary my grandpa had to remove lots form an infested puppy my cousin got over 20 yrs ago, the breeder when contacted did not care, the dog lived to about 19yrs so don't think there were any ill effects from his method |

Stuart, sorry you are right, 85 human cases last year according to the BBC - I had previously read that Scotland was OK. I am definitely not a Buddhist either as far as Ticks are concerned. Don't know what it is about my Cockers but they all get ticks - I was once told it was because they have light coats. _________________ No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does - Christopher Morley |
