my dogs are not relay barkers until they are out in the garden or out for a walk, when they hear or see Someone they don't know, particularly the voices from next door. how do i deter them from doing this?.

Kendal if you ever get the magic answer pleeeeeeease let me know!!!!
Mishka and Moli will set each other off however they forget to stop most of the time.
What we have found work (for the most part) is once they have barked a couple of times at something we say quiet then distract them. It is definitely worse when they are both together.
If it becomes a big problem you can purchase a collar called ABOISTOP this lets a spray of citronella off every time the dog barks so the more they bark the stronger it gets. This is a safe and painless way. there are collars that give them a small shock but I definitely wouldn't use them.
Good luck |

difficult problem to solve....lots of dogs think that they are helping by barking to warn you of danger..some just like to make a noise.
Shouting at them is counter productive ( although it makes you feel better!), the dog will think you are barking too and will most likely get louder.
You can try to divert the dogs attention with a favorite toy or treat then praise as soon as thy stop, if they have a leash or long line on you can correct then praise.
Another technique is to spray water from a spray bottle or rattle a can full of stones to try and divert them.......again praise as soon as they stop.
If anyone finds a better method...let me know so I can try it out on Diesel
Murphy rarely barks but Diesel loves to.

i would never use the shock collars,
they used them in the jackass films and i would never want to put a dog through that.
thanks for all your advice i will definitely give them a go. |

I made a shaker as I called it to stop Mishka jumping up on people when they came in to the house it really worked but
robert isn't keen because she didn't like it
I just shook it saying a firm NO!
It definitely works and I would like to use it for the barking because I think it works well with quick results. |

You sound soooo like Robert. Maybe it should be the both of you we take to obedience classes!!
Mishka is Robert's baby. Just have to keep reminding him she isn't a human. He doesn't listen though!
I would definitely recommend the shaker. It worked really quickly. |

My dogs bark so my mum bought a water squirter from poundland and when they bark they get water squirted on them and now when they see the water squirter they stop barking because they don't like the water _________________ Elizabeth and Cara

We've got a water pistol too, it's great, all we have to do is pick it up now and he behaves himself! |

Glad you asked the question Kendal because my two are the same!!!
And when one starts the other joins in!
They love it when Chris shouts at them coz like John sed I think they think hes just joining in! They start jumping up on down on him as if to say yeah see keep going! Hes goes mad!
I watched the dog whisperer and he says if your dog barks its to do with danger or getting your attention!
What hes says is if its at a window /garden and they see something go out go down to there level (or as close to) so they can see that your having a look for them to check everything OK then distract them but no praise coz they didn't need to do it!
If its attention turn your back and do nothing!!!! (Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh)
Dog Borstal they used the bottle and stones but they use praise when the dog stops!!! _________________ Kindest Regards,
