I know vaccination has already been discussed, but I just read that titres are accepted for pets pass-boards. Does anyone know if this is correct?
I'm not planning to take Dale anywhere but if its good enough for traveling wouldn't it be acceptable for things like kennels?
I may have got it wrong but I think it measures the T cells and if they are low then immunity may be low though though not necessarily. If they are high then the dog has immunity?? _________________ Janice and Dale |

Titres is a test vets can do to check your dog's immunity before you decide to vaccinate. I wonder if anyone here has asked to have it done. _________________ Janice and Dale |

I wonder if the vet would tell you porkies just to get the money out of you for boosters anyway?
Am I being too cynical again? |

I dont know of dogs who have had it done, but I had to have it done before the second time I went to Africa to check if I needed a booster of a particular vaccine. Other than that, like Linsey, I'd have had no idea what the hell a titre test was. _________________ Ashley with Holly & Murphy.

Your Dog Mag has a good article on vaccination this month, I'd be intersted in getting it done only if I knew that if I didn't need a booster that my insurance would be valid etc etc. |

well at the kennel I'm not allowed to book a dog in unless it has proof of vaccination, we even have to keep the vac card during the dogs stay in case we get inspected. _________________ microchiping and grooming www.chipnclip.co.uk

Hi,
I am going to sound really ignorant here, but I know that there is a growing swell of belief that dogs don't need their booster injections. What is the reasoning behind this? Our yorkie Ben, who will be 16 this year has not had a booster for the last 5 years, and that was just because..I don't even know, I think he missed one, and then because he hardly goes out these days (he is very arthritic and has a throat condition where he can't get too much excersize) my Mum just never bothered with it.
Is there a feeling that these boosters cause harm to the dog? |

Its a bit like the debate over children's vaccinations, i think. So far as I can work out and I'm definitely no expert some dogs immune systems can react badly to the live vaccines. They're being blamed for various things some quite serious. However the diseases they protect against are nasty and often fatal. Healthy dogs generally seem fine with the vaccines but there's always the odd one that isn't. Apparently the immunity levels can still be quite good after a year so some people are suggesting boosters every three years. Again it depends on the dog. Titres can give some idea of a dogs level of immunity. I was thinking on the lines of 'if his immunity is good anyway why risk side effects for little gain?' dale's had the puppy vacs. and he'll get his first booster but after that tests seem an idea to think about.
If you search the forum I'm sure there's a thread about vaccinations that would tell you more. _________________ Janice and Dale |

Dog vaccines apparently don't last as long as children's vaccines for example.
The idea is to prevent disease and the spread of it rather than treat the dog once it is ill, having contracted something.
Hope that helps a little.
