just going out on a limb hear, someone on the agility forum asked about training a deaf dog, just wondering if anyone hear has any experience or knows anyone with any.

Could anyone with experience of training deaf dogs for agility (or obedience, for that matter) please PM me. I'm making this enquiry on behalf of someone who has recently joined our local pet obedience class and who is now thinking of taking up agility - I think she could benefit from some advice from someone who's been there, done that and worn the T-shirt. Rescue dog experience would be a real bonus. |

I trained Sheila, I didn't find it alot different than training normally but instead of the obvious which was using your voice and hand signals, it was just the hand signals, the main thing for me was making sure you have the dogs eye contact for attention. The key thing I would say to this person is make sure your hand signals are consistent. the main problem i had with the few deaf fosters and sheila is the recall issue a few times sheila got a scent and the disappeared and unfortunately difficult to get back but some people use a vibrating collar which does work in alot of cases but sheila being a nervous dog wouldn't wear it.
I think it will all depend on the age and nature of the dogs in question wether they pick it up quick but sheila did well but i never went as far as doing agility so unsure of how this would work but doubt very much that it would be impossible as I think in an agility situation if the dog is focused on you and cant hear they have less distraction than your average dog so perhaps would work to your advantage (could be wrong)
It takes time and patience but can be done good luck. |
