In my never ending quest to find a tool that works for me and Hektor, we received a new type of headcollar this morning.
I have been walking him these last few months with the prong (for strength) and a halti (for keeping control of his head), thank goodness for 2 ended leads! This has been working well as when he has one of his freaky moments at other dogs, I find that keeping control of his head is the key! The only problem is that the halti rides up and rubs at his eyes.
I ordered a 'GENCON' headcollar and it arrived this morning. Apparently it has a breaking strain of 1 ton, so will be strong enough. He did not object to it either and I felt it was comfortable enough for him to wear even when off lead.
We had a lovely walk down the Glen, meeting dogs off lead and even managed to walk past a GSD whose owners insisted I put Hek on lead to get past (they were worried about their dogs behaviour). Even got past the window of his arch enemy who was barking at us, with only a small reaction easily controlled.
Has anyone else used one of these?

Not heard of it, but sounds great, glad the walk went better.
I keep meaning to order a canny collar for Luka, but think I still like the prong the best _________________ lurchers Pixel and Zev and whippet, Fen

Oh no, I used the Gencon head collar on Dexter, sold to me by someone at a Dog Show. It was horrible, after a few days of wearing this, Dexter had a huge lump on his nose as although it could control him to a certain extent when he was younger and nuts, it unfortunatly did do damage and I had to stop wearing it. Although I must admit the Dexter seems to have sensitive skin that reacts to a lot of materials. _________________ Grace & Dexter |

Lisa, I don't know this one at all. Glad it is working for Hektor. I got an Illusion collar to try on Poppy. It doesn't work because her neck is too long. Waste of money...
Lots of people use a dominator on danes. I just don't like the look of them. I have never tried them. _________________ Regards,

Thanks for the warning Grace, I'll keep an eye on Heks nose for any reaction. Another great uneventful walk today
I had thought about getting the Illusion collar for Hektor, Lorna, so wont now if you had problems with it. I havent heard of a 'dominator' collar, sounds a bit scary but loads of people think that about a prong...

I hear you met up with Millie, Poppy's Newfie pal. Glad Hektor is still going well on his new collar. I am watching. If it continues I might get one for Poppy.
The Illusion would work if it were longer. Poppy has such a long neck. I thought of having another layer added but it would look so messy. _________________ Regards,

I haven't heard of that head collar before but the halti seems to work wonders for Angel even although she doesn't like the way it rides up into her eyes but a little bit of encouragement and a few treats we've come along way it works wonders for her. if you get the other 1 keep us posted on its progress.

Why don't you put a bridle on him and a saddle |

If I had a £1 for every time I heard that....
My thinking is, if you can control a 500kg horse with what is essentially the same thing as a Halti, then maybe this is the way to go!

Lisa, Have you seen the T-shirt on the GD site?
'Where's his saddle?
'Where's your Muzzle?'
I am so sick of hearing the cliche re saddle on Dane that I am seriously considering buying one . _________________ Regards,
